A French summer job and your online reputation

DCF: Citizenship → Identity, image and reputation

What this is

A secure Year 11 response and answer key, annotated so you can see which success criterion each part meets. The key idea for Step 2: every candidate has something useful to offer, but what they have made public changes how an employer reads it. Yanis has the least experience and the strongest public profile. Show this after pupils have written their own application.

Step 1: the advert

(a) From 1 July to 31 August 2027, 35 hours a week, with two days off each week.

(b) Many of the campsite’s customers come from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

(c) Patient and lively (dynamic); also enjoys teamwork. Experience: babysitting, a sports club or voluntary work.

(d) The minimum age for the receptionist job is 18.

(e) Free accommodation in a caravan on the campsite.

(f) It will look at candidates’ public social media profiles, and it promises to look only at information that is useful for the job. French law requires this: Article L1221-8 of the Code du travail says candidates must be told in advance how they will be assessed, and Article L1221-6 says the information must have a direct link with the job.

Part (f) draws a conclusion by linking the advert to the law, and shows that rules on personal data differ between countries. Evidences criteria 1 and 3.

Step 2: the three candidates

  Helps Harms Verdict
» She coaches children aged 6 to 8 and is proud of them. She blurred the children’s faces, which is responsible.« Mon chef au supermarché est vraiment nul. » She insults her boss in public and says she will lie about being ill to miss work.Job 1 fits her experience, but an employer will expect her to treat them the same way. Probably not invited; at best, invited and asked about the post.
» He has taught children. « J’ai fini ma formation de premiers secours. » A first aid course, very useful in a children’s club. He volunteers at a library.Nothing public harms him. The only weakness is that he has no paid work experience yet.Job 1. Invite: everything public shows he is reliable, kind and useful with children.
» She already has snack-bar experience and the exact quality Job 2 asks for.« Qui vient à la plage demain au lieu d’aller au lycée ? » She is skipping school. « Tu chantes vraiment mal. » An unkind public comment: how would she treat customers?Job 2 on paper, but her posts cancel out her experience. Not invited.

(g) Manon’s post with her new phone number and home address. Anyone, including strangers, can see where she lives and contact her. The details can be copied or screenshotted and used by scammers, and they stay online even if she deletes the post later.

Every judgement is backed by a French quotation and its meaning. The grid is fair: it finds real strengths in Chloé and Manon, and it separates a reputation risk from a safety risk. Evidences criteria 2 and 3.

Step 3: translation

  1. Many of our customers come from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
  2. You stay calm when it is very busy.
  3. On Saturday I coached the little ones at my football club.
  4. This summer I gave guitar lessons to my two little cousins.
  5. Tomorrow I am not going to go.

Sentence 2 turns quand il y a beaucoup de monde into natural English (“when it is very busy”), not “when there is a lot of world”. Sentences 3 and 4 keep the perfect tense; sentence 5 keeps the near future (“am not going to go”). Evidences criterion 5.

Step 4: the application

Madame, Monsieur,

Cordialement,
Cerys Evans

127 words, not counting the greeting and sign-off. Formal throughout (Madame, Monsieur, votre camping, si vous m’acceptez). Past: j’ai aidé. Present: je fais, je parle, and j’apprends … depuis cinq ans (present tense with depuis, not the perfect). Future and conditional: je voudrais, je pourrai, j’organiserai, with a si clause. Each quality has a reason with parce que. It answers the advert directly: children, sport, English, and Welsh as the “other language” bonus. Evidences criterion 4.

Step 5: a reputation plan

ActionWhat exactly, and why it helps
Keep or addA public post about helping to run the swimming club’s gala for younger swimmers, with no children’s faces shown. It is evidence of the experience my application claims, and shows I think about other people’s privacy.
Change a privacy settingMake my personal account visible to friends only, and turn off location tags, so strangers and employers see only what I choose and nobody can tell where I am.
Delete, or never postAnything insulting someone, complaining about school or a boss, or planning to skip school or work; and never my phone number or address. An employer reads these as a preview of how I would behave at work.

(18 words)

Each action is specific and gives a reason linked to employment. The plan builds a positive reputation rather than just hiding things, and the bio matches the application. Evidences criteria 3 and 6.
