A secure Year 10 response and answer key, annotated so you can see which success criterion each part meets. The model page is for Aberdare; pupils in other towns should write about their own. Key answers for Step 1: the castle is closed on Mondays; the family saves €6 (€24 for four tickets, €18 for the family ticket); 3 days’ bike hire costs €45. Show this after pupils have planned their own page.
(a) In the south of Germany, between hills and forests. (It is a small town on a river, in the middle of the forest.)
(b) Every Saturday from 08:00 to 13:00, on the market square. It is free.
(c) The castle is closed on Mondays. On Tuesday, four separate tickets cost 8 + 8 + 4 + 4 = €24. The family ticket costs €18, so they save €6.
(d) A 50-metre pool, a long slide and a café. It is closed in bad weather.
(e) At the tourist office. 3 × €15 = €45.
(f) By train: it is a 10-minute walk from the station to the old town. By bus: route 3 stops right outside the town hall.
(g) On 17 July at 19:00, in the castle gardens. It is free, and there is a concert.
Every answer gives the time, place or price the question asks for, with times in the 24-hour clock. Part (c) needs two pieces of information from the same table: the opening days and the prices. Evidences criterion 1.
| Feature | Who it helps, and how |
|---|---|
| The menu at the top | Every visitor: they can jump straight to the section they need (where to stay, where to eat) without reading the whole page. |
| A heading for each attraction | People skimming on a phone find each place quickly; screen reader users can jump from heading to heading. |
| Tables for opening times and prices | People planning a day out can compare times and prices at a glance, because the numbers are not hidden in sentences. |
| The image descriptions | Blind and partially sighted visitors, whose screen reader reads the description aloud. They also show if a picture does not load. |
| DE / EN | Visitors who do not read German: one site serves two audiences. |
| Anreise and Kontakt | Visitors turning interest into a real trip: how to get there, and who to ask. |
Kleinbach: (1) It is one long sentence joined by und, with no headings: split it into short sections, one per place, each with a heading. (2) It has no practical information („manchmal geöffnet“, „nicht teuer“): give real opening times and prices in a table, or „siehe Webseite“. (3) The picture has no description: write one, such as „Die Kirche von Kleinbach am See“. Also, „klicken Sie hier“ does not say where the link goes, and there is no way to get there and no contact.
Each feature is linked to a real user and a real need, not just named. The Kleinbach fixes show that the same German can work well or badly depending on the structure. Evidences criteria 2 and 3.
man becomes “you”, not “man”. Freibad is an open-air pool, a detail that matters for sentence 3. Evidences criterion 1.

About 125 words of German, counting the menu and the image descriptions. The menu matches the sections. Every fact is true: Aberdare grew up around coal mining; Aberdare Park opened in 1869 and has a lake; Dare Valley Country Park, built on old colliery land, has woods, lakes and hills; the Coliseum in Trecynon shows films and live shows. Because the writer does not know the Coliseum’s times or prices, the plan says siehe Webseite instead of inventing them. The German uses capital letters on every noun, the verb second (Früher gab es…, heute gibt es…), kann man … wandern with the infinitive at the end, and weil … ist with the verb at the end. The Welsh name of the country park is included, which suits a bilingual country. Evidences criteria 3, 4, 5 and 6.
“Your Coliseum section says what you can do there but not why a visitor should go. Add one opinion with a reason, for example: Das Coliseum ist toll, weil man dort Filme und Theaterstücke sehen kann.”
The improvement is specific, uses the checklist language, and gives a model sentence the writer can use. Evidences criterion 4.
