A secure Year 11 response for GCSE Core Cymraeg, Unit 3: Preparing for the Future (3.1.1 Writing, 3.1.2 Reading, 3.1.3 Preparing for the future), annotated so you can see which success criterion each part meets. It is also the answer key. The two answers that must be right in Step 2: an illness on the day is a phone call (policy 3), and a customer never gets a pupil’s personal number (policy 5). English translations are given in italics. Show it after pupils have written their own e-mail.
(a) Dydd Sadwrn 17 Gorffennaf, rhwng 09:00 a 16:00.
(b) Erbyn 08:15.
(c) Pa weithgaredd hoffwn i ei helpu a pham; oes gen i brofiad; oes gen i gwestiynau. Erbyn dydd Gwener 9 Gorffennaf.
(d) Ffonio Elin, rhwng 07:30 a 08:00 (polisi 3). Dim e-bost, a dim neges yn y sgwrs grŵp.
(a) Saturday 17 July, 09:00 to 16:00. (b) By 08:15. (c) Which activity I would like to help with and why; whether I have experience; whether I have questions. By Friday 9 July. (d) Phone Elin between 07:30 and 08:00; no e-mail and no group chat message.
Every detail is found, including the deadline and the time window in the policy, which is in a different text from the e-mail. Linking two texts is a Unit 3 reading skill.
| Sefyllfa | Pa ffordd? | Cywair | Pam? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Derbyn y shifft a gofyn am y crys-T | E-bost at Elin | Ffurfiol, chi | Policy 2: a formal work matter. Elin asked for an e-mail by 9 July, and it gives her a written record of who is doing what. |
| 2. Sâl am 07:40 | Galwad ffôn | Ffurfiol ond byr, chi | Policy 3. It is urgent: staff arrive at 08:15, so Elin must know now to find cover. A call gets an answer straight away; an e-mail might not be read in time. |
| 3. Newid shifft gyda Tomos | Sgwrs grŵp y staff (neu neges destun) | Anffurfiol, ti | Policy 4: this is the one thing the group chat is for. It is quick and friendly. Once Tomos agrees, tell Elin by e-mail, because shifts are a formal matter (policy 2). |
| 4. Dweud wrth deuluoedd | Post ar gyfryngau cymdeithasol y ganolfan, a’r wefan | Chi, bywiog, dwyieithog | Policies 6 and 1: it reaches many families at once, can be shared, and can carry a photo and the date. Welsh first. New staff write the draft; trained staff post it. |
| 5. Canŵio wedi’i ganslo am 11:00 | Cyhoeddiad a phoster | Chi, clir, dwyieithog | Policy 7: the people who need to know are on site now, and not all of them will check their phones. The poster stays up all afternoon for people who arrive later. |
| 6. Rhiant eisiau fy rhif ffôn | Dim: cyfeirio at y wefan neu’r swyddfa | Cwrtais, chi | Policy 5: my personal number is private, and a booking made by text would not be recorded by the centre. “Gallwch chi archebu ar wefan y ganolfan neu yn y swyddfa.” |
Meddylia: A group chat message is wrong for situation 2 for three reasons: Elin might not read it before 08:15, so nobody covers the climbing wall; the group chat is only for shift swaps (policy 4); and your illness is private, so it should not go to every member of staff.
Each choice names a service, a register and a reason tied to the purpose: speed for the emergency, a record for formal matters, reach for publicity, presence on site for urgent news, and privacy for the parent. The pupil also sees that one situation can need two channels (situation 3). This is reflecting on communication services and justifying selections for the delivery of information, the Progression Step 5 statement. Evidences criteria 1, 2 and 6.
Haia Tomos! Mae parti pen-blwydd Mam-gu gyda fi ddydd Sadwrn, felly mae’n rhaid i fi adael am 14:00. Wyt ti’n gallu gwneud y canŵio yn y prynhawn? Bydda i’n gwneud dy shifft di ddydd Sul. Diolch, ti’n seren!
Hiya Tomos! It’s my Gran’s birthday party on Saturday, so I have to leave at 14:00. Can you do the canoeing in the afternoon? I’ll do your shift on Sunday. Thanks, you’re a star!
38 words. Informal and friendly (Haia, ti’n seren), uses ti and dy throughout, gives a reason and offers something back. It contains no customer information, so it is safe for the group chat. Evidences criterion 3.
Pwnc: Diwrnod Agored, 17 Gorffennaf
Annwyl Ms Morgan,
Diolch am eich e-bost. Hoffwn i dderbyn y shifft ar gyfer y Diwrnod Agored ddydd Sadwrn 17 Gorffennaf, a bydda i’n cyrraedd erbyn 08:15.
Hoffwn i helpu ar y wal ddringo, achos rydw i wrth fy modd yn dringo ac rydw i’n mwynhau gweithio gyda phlant. Y llynedd, gwnes i Wobr Efydd Dug Caeredin yn yr ysgol, ac roeddwn i’n helpu gyda gemau i blant bach yng nghlwb yr Urdd yn fy mhentref bob wythnos.
Mae gen i un cwestiwn. Dydw i ddim wedi canŵio o’r blaen. Fydd hyfforddiant cyn y diwrnod, neu fyddai’n well i mi helpu gyda’r helfa drysor yn y prynhawn?
Byddwn i’n hapus iawn i wneud unrhyw waith arall hefyd, os oes angen.
Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at weithio gyda chi.
Yn gywir,
Cerys Williams
Subject: Open Day, 17 July. Dear Ms Morgan, Thank you for your e-mail. I would like to accept the shift for the Open Day on Saturday 17 July, and I will arrive by 08:15. I would like to help on the climbing wall, because I love climbing and I enjoy working with children. Last year I did my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at school, and I used to help with games for small children at the Urdd club in my village every week. I have one question. I have not canoed before. Will there be training before the day, or would it be better for me to help with the treasure hunt in the afternoon? I would be very happy to do any other work too, if needed. I look forward to working with you. Yours sincerely, Cerys Williams
124 words in the body, counted from Diolch to chi. Answers all three of Elin’s points in order, one short paragraph each, so she can act on it quickly. Formal throughout: Annwyl Ms Morgan, eich, chi, Yn gywir, and no slang. Tenses: present (rydw i’n mwynhau), past (gwnes i, roeddwn i’n), future (bydda i’n, Fydd) and conditional (Hoffwn i, Byddwn i, fyddai). The question is a real one: Cerys noticed on the rota that she is down for canoeing. Mutations to check: i dderbyn, Wobr, yng nghlwb, fy mhentref, i wneud. Evidences criteria 3, 4 and 5.
(a) Diwrnod Agored Nant Llwyd! Dewch i’n Diwrnod Agored i deuluoedd ddydd Sadwrn 17 Gorffennaf, rhwng 09:00 a 16:00. Mae popeth am ddim! Rhowch gynnig ar y wal ddringo, ewch i ganŵio ar y llyn, neu dewch â’r plant bach i’r helfa drysor. Gwisgwch esgidiau cryf a dewch â chot law, rhag ofn. Welwn ni chi yno!
Nant Llwyd Open Day! Come to our family Open Day on Saturday 17 July, from 09:00 to 16:00. Everything is free! Have a go on the climbing wall, go canoeing on the lake, or bring the little ones to the treasure hunt. Wear strong shoes and bring a raincoat, just in case. See you there!
(b) Mae’r canŵio wedi’i ganslo heddiw oherwydd y gwynt cryf. Mae’r wal ddringo ar agor tan 16:00.
The post is 56 words, uses chi and five commands (Dewch, Rhowch gynnig, ewch, Gwisgwch, dewch â), and gives the date, time, cost and what to wear. It names no member of staff and no customer, so it follows policy 6. The translation is accurate and uses the passive wedi’i ganslo; the poster would show the Welsh first, then the English (policy 1). Evidences criteria 3 and 6.
