Ordering the steps to plant a sunflower seed

DCF: Data and computational thinking → Problem-solving and modelling

Also assessed, LNF: Literacy → Writing → Vocabulary, spelling, grammar

What this is

A finished Year 1 pupil page. The pupil’s writing is shown in blue and their circles in red. It is also the answer key: Task 1 is A 5, B 6, C 3, D 1, E 4, F 2; in Task 2 the mistake is steps 3 and 4.

What to look for

A finished pupil page

Name: Efa Class: Class 1 Date:

1 Put the steps in order. Write 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Which step is first? Write 1 in its box.

A5B6C3D1E4F2

A pot of soil is 1, the finger hole 2, the seed 3, covering it 4, watering 5 and the sunny window 6. Every number is used once. Evidences DCF: recognise and follow instructions in the appropriate order.

2 Robot Rhys made a mistake. Circle the 2 steps in the wrong order.

Robot Rhys planted his seed like this:

123456

Where is the seed now? Tick.

on top of the soil ✓   under the soil

Steps 3 and 4 are circled: Rhys covered the hole before he dropped the seed in, so the seed is sitting on top of the soil. Evidences DCF: identify errors in a simple set of instructions (algorithm).

3 Write the words.

Trace the words.

seed   pot

Now write these words. Say the sounds. Write 1 sound in each box.

sun   soil

sun is spelled correctly. soil is written as 3 sounds with the oi digraph in one box. A plausible spelling such as s-oy-l still shows the pupil hearing every sound. Letters are formed left to right and sit on the line. Evidences literacy: write words using knowledge of letters and the sounds they represent.

4 Be a robot! Listen and draw.

Your teacher will read 4 steps. Do them in order.

The pot, the soil on top, the seed in the soil and the sun in the corner are all there, so all 4 spoken steps were followed in order. Evidences DCF: follow instructions in the appropriate order.
