What this is

An annotated Year 9 model response and complete answer key with English translations for the cover teacher. Key answers: Step 1(a) yn bendant = definitely, ar y llaw arall = on the other hand, yn anffodus = unfortunately, o’i gymharu â = compared with; Step 1(b) 1 Fact, 2 Opinion, 3 Fact, 4 Opinion, 5 Fact, 6 Opinion; Step 2 official figures: £12.00 youth ticket, 8 bands, shuttle bus every 30 min until 20:30, and free water refill taps beside the first-aid tent.

Step 1: opinion phrases and separating facts from opinions

(a) Opinion and contrast phrases

Welsh phrase English meaning Role in a review
1. yn bendant definitely Strong certainty / positive emphasis
2. ar y llaw arall on the other hand Contrast (shifting from a positive point to a drawback)
3. yn anffodus unfortunately Introducing a negative point or problem
4. o’i gymharu â compared with Comparison (comparing this year’s festival with last year’s)

(b) Fact (Ffaith) vs Opinion (Barn)

No. Statement from Reviews 1 and 2 Fact or Opinion? How do you know?
1 “Roedd y tocyn ieuenctid yn costio £12” Fact (Ffaith) The £12 ticket price can be verified on the official price list.
2 “Roedd y band roc Mellt yn anhygoel” Opinion (Barn) Whether a band is “amazing” (anhygoel) is a personal judgement; another listener might disagree.
3 “Roedd 8 band yn chwarae ar y prif lwyfan rhwng 11:00 a 20:00” Fact (Ffaith) Both the number of bands (8) and the opening hours (11:00 to 20:00) can be checked on the timetable.
4 “Roedd y pitsa tân coed yn flasus iawn” Opinion (Barn) Calling food “very tasty” (blasus iawn) is a personal taste judgement.
5 “Daeth y bws olaf am 20:15 yn lle 20:30” Fact (Ffaith) The departure time of the bus (20:15 vs the 20:30 schedule) is a checkable event.
6 “...sy’n rhy ddrud i bobl ifanc yn fy marn i” Opinion (Barn) Signalled by yn fy marn i (“in my opinion”) and the value judgement rhy ddrud (“too expensive”).

Distinguishes checkable figures from evaluative adjectives and discourse markers. Evidences criteria 1 and 2.

Step 2: fact-checking against the festival timetable

(a) Completed verification table

Detail checked What Cai or Elen says What @BwydGorau99 says Official figure in Section 2 & who is accurate
Youth ticket price £12 (Cai) £25 £12.00 (under 16). Cai is accurate; @BwydGorau99 is false.
Bands on main stage 8 bands (Cai) Only 2 bands 8 bands (including Mellt at 18:30). Cai is accurate; @BwydGorau99 is false.
Festival shuttle bus Scheduled last bus 20:30, arrived 20:15 (Elen) No buses at all Shuttle bus runs every 30 min (£2 return) with the last bus scheduled at 20:30. Elen’s timetable figure is accurate (though her bus left 15 min early); @BwydGorau99 is false.
Drinking water £3.50 per bottle (Elen) Not mentioned Bottled water is £3.50 (Elen is right), but free water refill taps are available beside the first-aid tent.

(b) Three reasons why Review 3 (@BwydGorau99) is untrustworthy:

  1. Impossible time stamp: It was posted on Saturday at 09:00, which is two hours before the festival gates even opened at 11:00.
  2. Unverified anonymous source with a commercial motive: The account is not a verified ticket holder and ends by telling readers to buy tickets on its own rival website (“Prynwch docynnau rhad ar fy ngwefan i yn lle hynny!”).
  3. Provably false figures: Every factual claim it makes (£25 ticket, no buses, only 2 bands) contradicts the official programme and the verified reviews.

Cross-checks claims against primary data and evaluates source provenance, timing and motive. Evidences criterion 3.

Step 3 & Step 4: model 70 to 90 word balanced Welsh response

Step 3 (Plan): Positive: £12 youth ticket for 8 bands including Mellt, much better sound this year, tasty £6 wood-fired pizza. Negative + solution: long food queues at 13:00, last bus left at 20:15 instead of 20:30, £3.50 bottled water (bring an empty bottle for the free water taps).

Step 4 (Model Welsh paragraph, 83 words):

Hoffwn i fynd i Ŵyl Cerdd Glan Taf y flwyddyn nesaf gyda fy ffrindiau. Yn bendant, mae £12 am docyn ieuenctid yn werth chweil achos mae 8 band yn chwarae ar y prif lwyfan, gan gynnwys Mellt. O’i gymharu â gŵyl y llynedd, roedd y sain yn llawer gwell ac roedd y pitsa tân coed (£6) yn flasus iawn. Ar y llaw arall, roedd y ciwiau am fwyd yn hir am 13:00 ac, yn anffodus, daeth y bws olaf am 20:15. Felly, bydda i’n defnyddio’r tapiau dŵr am ddim ac yn dal y bws am 20:00!

(English translation for the teacher: I would like to go to Gŵyl Cerdd Glan Taf next year with my friends. Definitely, £12 for a youth ticket is great value because 8 bands play on the main stage, including Mellt. Compared with last year’s festival, the sound was much better and the wood-fired pizza (£6) was very tasty. On the other hand, the queues for food were long at 13:00 and, unfortunately, the last bus came at 20:15. Therefore, I will use the free water taps and catch the bus at 20:00! [83 Welsh words])

Uses all four target opinion/contrast phrases naturally, quotes specific figures (£12, 8 bands, £6, 13:00, 20:15, 20:00), balances strengths and weaknesses, and stays within the 70 to 90 word target. Evidences criterion 4.

If you finish early: answers

Cost for 3 friends: Per person = £12.00 (ticket) + £2.00 (return bus) + £6.00 (pizza) + £0.00 (free water tap) = £20.00 each. For 3 friends = 3 × £20.00 = £60.00 total. By using the free water refill taps instead of buying three £3.50 bottles, they save 3 × £3.50 = £10.50 altogether.

Organisers’ reply in Welsh: Mae’n ddrwg gennym am y bws am 20:15, Elen, a chofiwch fod tapiau ail-lenwi dŵr am ddim wrth y babell cymorth cyntaf! (We are sorry about the 20:15 bus, Elen, and remember that there are free water refill taps beside the first-aid tent!)
