Saving and naming photos of a shadow

DCF: Interacting and collaborating → Storing and sharing

Also assessed, LNF: Numeracy → Geometry and measurement → Measurement

What this is

A finished Year 2 pupil page. The pupil’s writing is shown in blue and their circles in red. It is also the answer key: A 9 o’clock, 7 slabs; B half past 10, 4 slabs; C 1 o’clock, 2 slabs; D half past 3, 5 slabs; order C, B, D, A; save steps camera 1, type a name 2, save 3.

What to look for

A finished pupil page

Name: Mali Class: Class 2 Date:

1 Read the clocks and count the slabs.

Look at the 4 photos on the pretend tablet. For each photo, write the time on the clock. Then count how many slabs long the shadow is.

PhotoTimeShadow length
A9 o’clock7 slabs
Bhalf past 104 slabs
C1 o’clock2 slabs
Dhalf past 35 slabs

All 4 times are read correctly, including half past. The shadow lengths 7, 4, 2 and 5 are counted in slabs, a non-standard unit, starting from the bottom of the cone. Evidences numeracy: read o’clock and half past, and measure with non-standard units.

2 Put the shadows in order.

Write the photo letters from the shortest shadow to the longest.

shortest CBDA longest

At what time was the shadow shortest? 1 o’clock

C, B, D, A is correct (2, 4, 5, 7 slabs). The shortest shadow is at 1 o’clock, around the middle of the day when the Sun is highest. Evidences numeracy: compare and order lengths.

3 Choose the best file name for photo A. Circle.

IMG_2041 photo shadow 9 o’clock

Why is it best? Tick.

✓ It tells me what is in the photo and when it was taken.

It is the shortest name.

The pupil chose the name that says what the photo shows and when, so it is easy to find later. Evidences DCF: save files using a file name that is easy to search for.

4 Write a good file name for photos B, C and D.

Photo B: shadow half past 10

Photo C: shadow 1 o’clock

Photo D: shadow half past 3

Each name follows the same pattern (what, then when), so the 4 files sort neatly and can be told apart. Evidences DCF: choose appropriate, searchable file names.

5 Make a folder.

Folder name: shadows June

Number the steps for saving a photo: 1, 2, 3.

take the photo1save it in the folder3type a good name2

A clear folder name that says what is inside, and the save steps in order: take the photo, name it, save it. Evidences DCF: save and organise digital work.

6 Find it!

Mrs Hughes asks for the photo with the longest shadow. Which file name will you look for?

shadow 9 o’clock

Would IMG_2043 help you find it quickly? yes no

The pupil used their measurements (the longest is photo A, 7 slabs) to pick the right file by its name. Evidences DCF: retrieve saved work, and numeracy: compare lengths.
