Siarad am arolwg pobl ifanc / Talking about a youth survey in Welsh

DCF: Data and computational thinking → Data and information literacy

What this is

A secure Year 10 response for GCSE Core Cymraeg, Unit 2 (2.1.3 Analysing sources) and Unit 3 (3.1.2 Reading tables and graphs), annotated so you can see which success criterion each part meets. It is also the answer key. Key figures: sport 60 young people in both years; biggest rise social media, 13% to 20%; table 35%, 27.5%, 17.5%, 15%, 5%. The key idea in Step 3: the percentage for sport fell because more young people answered and online games grew, but the number doing sport did not change. English translations are given in italics.

Cam 1: geiriau’r graff

All ten correct. Note the mutation: tua changes traean to thraean. These phrases are the language of the success criteria: without them pupils cannot describe a trend in Welsh.

Cam 2: darllen y graff a’r tabl

(a) Chwarae gemau ar-lein, gyda 30%.

(b) Cyfryngau cymdeithasol. Mae wedi codi o 13% i 20%, sef 7 pwynt canran. Social media, up from 13% to 20%, which is 7 percentage points. Online games rose by 5 points, so social media rose most.

(c) 2023: 30% o 200 = 30 ÷ 100 × 200 = 60.   2025: 25% o 240 = 25 ÷ 100 × 240 = 60.

(d)

DymuniadGwaith%
Mwy o fysiau gyda’r nos84 ÷ 240 × 10035%
Caffi i bobl ifanc66 ÷ 240 × 10027.5%
Canolfan chwaraeon rhatach42 ÷ 240 × 10017.5%
Parc sglefrio36 ÷ 240 × 10015%
Clwb ieuenctid Cymraeg12 ÷ 240 × 1005%

Gwiriad: 35 + 27.5 + 17.5 + 15 + 5 = 100. Check: the percentages add up to 100.

(e) Byddai mwy o fysiau gyda’r nos yn helpu Lowri. Dyma’r dymuniad mwyaf poblogaidd, gyda 35%. Byddai canolfan chwaraeon rhatach yn helpu Aled (17.5%). More evening buses would help Lowri; it is the most popular wish, at 35%. A cheaper sports centre would help Aled (17.5%).

Every figure is read correctly, the working is shown, and the pupil checks that the percentages total 100. Part (b) compares the size of two changes rather than just naming one. Evidences criteria 1 and 2.

Cam 3: ydy’r pennawd yn deg?

(a) Nac ydy. Mae canran y bobl ifanc sy’n gwneud chwaraeon wedi gostwng o 30% i 25%, ond 60 o bobl ifanc oedd yn gwneud chwaraeon yn 2023 a 60 yn 2025. Mae’r nifer yr un peth. Mae’r ganran yn llai achos atebodd mwy o bobl yn 2025 (240, nid 200) ac mae gemau ar-lein wedi codi. Hefyd, mae “nag erioed” yn anghywir: dim ond dwy flynedd sydd yn yr arolwg.

No. The percentage doing sport fell from 30% to 25%, but 60 young people did sport in 2023 and 60 in 2025. The number is the same. The percentage is lower because more people answered in 2025 (240, not 200) and online games rose. Also, “than ever” is wrong: the survey covers only two years. And each person chose only one main activity, so someone whose main activity is gaming may still play sport.

(b) Pobl ifanc o ysgolion eraill, a phobl ifanc dan 14 neu dros 16 oed. Hefyd, pobl ifanc heb ffôn neu gyfrifiadur, achos roedd yr arolwg ar-lein. Young people from other schools, and young people under 14 or over 16. Also young people without a phone or computer, because the survey was online.

(c) Arolwg: gemau ar-lein yn codi, ond yr un nifer yn gwneud chwaraeon (Survey: online games rising, but the same number doing sport)

This is the heart of the lesson. The pupil separates a percentage from a number, spots the words in the headline that go beyond the data (“than ever”), and names who the sample leaves out. That is analysing a data set and judging a conclusion, not just reading it. Evidences criteria 3 and 4.

Cam 4: ysgrifennu am y data

Mae’r graff yn dangos amser hamdden pobl ifanc Cwm Cynon. Yn 2025, chwarae gemau ar-lein oedd y prif weithgaredd, gyda 30%. Mae cyfryngau cymdeithasol wedi codi o 13% i 20%. Yn 2023, roedd chwaraeon yn fwy poblogaidd, ond mae’r un nifer yn gwneud chwaraeon heddiw: 60 yn 2023 a 60 yn 2025, felly mae’r pennawd yn annheg. Mae tua thraean (35%) eisiau mwy o fysiau gyda’r nos. Dw i’n cytuno â Lowri, oherwydd does dim bws yn fy mhentref i ar ôl chwech o’r gloch. Yn fy marn i, byddai mwy o fysiau yn helpu pobl ifanc i gwrdd â ffrindiau.

The chart shows the free time of young people in the Cynon Valley. In 2025, playing online games was the main activity, with 30%. Social media has risen from 13% to 20%. In 2023, sport was more popular, but the same number do sport today: 60 in 2023 and 60 in 2025, so the headline is unfair. About a third (35%) want more evening buses. I agree with Lowri, because there is no bus in my village after six o’clock. In my opinion, more buses would help young people to meet friends.

101 words. Uses six figures, two trends (wedi codi; the sport comparison), the past tense (Yn 2023, roedd), an opinion with reasons (felly, oherwydd), a link to a speaker on the sheet, and byddai. Correct mutations to look for: prif weithgaredd, tua thraean, fy mhentref, i gwrdd. Evidences criterion 5.

Cam 5: siarad mewn parau (enghraifft)

A: Mae’r graff yn dangos bod gemau ar-lein yn boblogaidd iawn. Yn 2025, roedd 30% yn chwarae gemau. Beth wyt ti’n feddwl?

B: Dw i’n cytuno. Mae cyfryngau cymdeithasol wedi codi hefyd, o 13% i 20%. Y penwythnos diwethaf, es i i chwarae pêl-droed, ond nos Sadwrn roeddwn i’n chwarae gemau ar-lein.

A: Wyt ti’n cytuno ag Aled?

B: Ydw, achos mae’r ganolfan hamdden yn ddrud iawn. Byddai canolfan chwaraeon rhatach yn helpu pobl ifanc i gadw’n heini.

A: Dw i ddim yn meddwl bod y pennawd yn deg. Roedd 60 o bobl ifanc yn gwneud chwaraeon yn 2023, a 60 yn 2025.

A: The chart shows that online games are very popular. In 2025, 30% played games. What do you think? B: I agree. Social media has risen too, from 13% to 20%. Last weekend I went to play football, but on Saturday night I was playing online games. A: Do you agree with Aled? B: Yes, because the leisure centre is very expensive. A cheaper sports centre would help young people keep fit. A: I don’t think the headline is fair. 60 young people did sport in 2023, and 60 in 2025.

Both speakers use a figure, give an opinion with a reason, ask a question, and use the past tense and Byddai: every box on the partner checklist is ticked. This is the Unit 2 pattern of discussing the content, then expressing an opinion. Evidences criteria 2 and 5.
