5 minutesCalculating Heart Rate Recovery and Hydration for a Cross-Country Run
Six Year 7 runners have completed the 2.4 km Coed y Bryn cross-country course (3 laps of 800 m). Today you will turn their 15-second pulse counts into beats per minute, convert their lap splits into minutes and seconds, and work out how much water the squad needs.
While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then look at Section 1 of the stimulus sheet.
Starter question: There are four 15-second intervals in 1 minute (60 seconds). If Dewi counts 16 beats in 15 seconds at rest, what is his resting heart rate in beats per minute (bpm)?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key rules · PE · Year 7
5 minutesFour calculation rules for today
Keep these four rules on the board in mind as you work through your tables.
Pulse & recovery drop
- Heart rate (bpm) = 15-second pulse count × 4.
- Recovery drop (bpm) = Peak HR − 2-minute recovery HR (a bigger drop means faster recovery).
Time & water conversions
- Seconds to minutes:
60 seconds = 1 minute(for example, 600 s = 10 min). - Millilitres to litres:
1,000 ml = 1 litre (L)(divide ml by 1,000).
Slide 3 of 7 · Step 1 · PE · Year 7
10 minutesStep 1: Complete the pulse and heart-rate recovery table
Use Table 1 on the stimulus sheet to multiply each 15-second count by 4, then subtract the 2-minute recovery HR from the peak HR to find the recovery drop.
| Runner | Resting HR (bpm) | Peak HR (bpm) | 2-min recovery HR (bpm) | Recovery drop: Peak − 2-min (bpm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dewi | 16 × 4 = 64 | 46 × 4 = 184 | 32 × 4 = 128 | 184 − 128 = 56 bpm |
| Ffion | 17 × 4 = ? | 47 × 4 = ? | 35 × 4 = ? | ? |

10 minutesStep 2: Convert 800 m lap splits into finish times
Use Table 2 on the stimulus sheet to add each runner’s three 800 m lap times in seconds, then convert the total into minutes and seconds.
Helpful 60-times-table benchmarks:
10 min = 600 s · 11 min = 660 s · 12 min = 720 s · 13 min = 780 s
Worked first row (Dewi): 220 + 230 + 225 = 675 s. Since 11 min = 660 s, 675 − 660 = 15 s → 11 min 15 s.
Slide 5 of 7 · Step 3 · PE · Year 7
12 minutesStep 3: Work out hydration in millilitres and litres
Use Section 3 of the stimulus sheet to calculate the water needed for 1 runner, for the group of 6 runners, and for the full Year 7 cross-country squad of 24 runners.
| Stage | Water per runner (ml) | For 6 runners (ml and L) | For 24 runners (ml and L) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before + During + After | 250 + 150 + 350 = 750 ml (0.75 L) | 6 × 750 = 4,500 ml (4.5 L) | 24 × 750 = ? |
Container check: Each team water carrier holds 5 litres (5,000 ml). How many full 5 L carriers must the PE teacher fill for 24 runners, and how much spare water is left over?

5 minutesStep 4: Write 3 training conclusions from the figures
Write 3 clear training conclusions for the PE coach in Step 4, backing each one with numbers from your tables.
Cover these three points:
- Cardiovascular fitness & recovery: name the runner with the fastest finish time and largest heart-rate recovery drop (Lowri: 10 min 40 s, 60 bpm drop) and compare with Mared (13 min 00 s, 36 bpm drop).
- Pacing strategy: compare Gethin’s splits (200 s, 250 s, 290 s) with Dewi’s steady splits (220 s, 230 s, 225 s) to show why steady pacing wins.
- Hydration planning: state the total water needed for 24 runners (18 L) and how many 5 L carriers to bring (4 carriers).

3 minutesQuick self-check before handing in
Check your answers against the board before your worksheet is collected.
- Recovery drops (bpm): Dewi 56, Ffion 48, Gethin 40, Lowri 60, Mared 36, Osian 52.
- Finish times: Lowri 10 min 40 s (640 s), Dewi 11 min 15 s (675 s), Osian 11 min 30 s (690 s), Ffion 12 min 00 s (720 s), Gethin 12 min 20 s (740 s), Mared 13 min 00 s (780 s).
- Hydration: 750 ml (0.75 L) per runner; 4,500 ml (4.5 L) for 6 runners; 18,000 ml (18 L) for 24 runners = 4 carriers of 5 L (2 L spare).
