5 minutesCalculating Proportions and Planning a Community Food Bank Budget
In Cwm Teg, the local mosque, gurdwara, church and synagogue run an interfaith food pantry together. Today you will calculate 2.5% Zakah donations, scale a 3-day food parcel for a family of four within a £15.00 budget, and check religious dietary laws.
While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then read Section 1 and Section 2 on the stimulus sheet.
Starter question: Why does a Sikh gurdwara serve only vegetarian food in the Langar, and what is the nisab in Islam?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key terms · RE · Year 8
5 minutesCharity Teachings and the 2.5% Zakah Rule
Four religious traditions inspire the Cwm Teg Food Pantry, and numeracy helps volunteers manage donations and parcel budgets fairly.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Zakah & Nisab (Islam) | Mandatory annual charity of 2.5% (1/40th) on savings held for a year at or above the nisab (£4,000). |
| Sewa & Langar (Sikhism) | Selfless service to others and the free vegetarian community kitchen open to all as equals. |
| Agape & Tzedakah | Christian unconditional love in action (agape) and Jewish righteous giving for justice (tzedakah). |
Slide 3 of 7 · Step 1: Calculate 2.5% Zakah contributions · RE · Year 8
10 minutesStep 1: Work Out Zakah for 4 Donors
Check each donor’s annual savings against the £4,000 nisab in Step 1. If they are at or above £4,000, calculate 2.5%. If they are below £4,000, write £0.00.
Worked first row (Donor 1: Tariq, savings = £6,000):
Above £4,000 nisab? Yes (£6,000 is above £4,000).
Working and Zakah due: £6,000 × 0.025 (or £6,000 ÷ 40) = £150.00.
Slide 4 of 7 · Step 2: Scale the 3-day family parcel and filter stock · RE · Year 8
10 minutesStep 2: Scale the Parcel (× 4) Within the £15.00 Budget
Use Section 3 of the stimulus sheet to scale the 1-person parcel up for a family of 4 in Step 2(a), then audit the 3 donated items (Items X, Y and Z) in Step 2(b).
Scaling Rule (× 4)
Row 1 (Rice): 500g × 4 = 2,000g (2 kg).
Cost: £0.80 × 4 = £3.20.
Budget Check
Add all 5 scaled costs together.
Subtract from £15.00 to find how much money is left over.
Slide 5 of 7 · Step 3: Justify your pantry plan and religious links · RE · Year 8
12 minutesStep 3: Justify the Cwm Teg Pantry Budget and Menu
Write a structured justification for the pantry trustees in Step 3 covering three points:
- 1. Financial stewardship: Show how the £660.00 Zakah fund and the £14.60 parcel cost keep the pantry within its £15.00 unit budget (with £0.40 spare per parcel).
- 2. Inclusive dietary design: Explain why the lentil, chickpea and rice base parcel works for Muslim (halal), Jewish (kosher), Sikh (Langar vegetarian) and Hindu families alike, and why Items X, Y and Z must be separated or declined.
- 3. Religious teachings: Link the pantry’s work to Zakah, Sewa / Langar, Agape and Tzedakah.
Slide 6 of 7 · Step 4: Database fields and self-check · RE · Year 8
5 minutesStep 4: Designing the Pantry Label Database
In Step 4, explain why a food bank spreadsheet needs separate boolean (Yes/No) columns for Vegetarian, Halal_Certified and Kosher_Certified rather than just one column called No_Pork.
Hint: Look at Item Y (Beef stew in red wine gravy with butter) and Item Z (Marshmallows with pork gelatine).
Slide 7 of 7 · Plenary quick check · RE · Year 8
3 minutesPlenary Quick Check Before Hand-In
Check your calculations against the board before handing in your worksheet:
| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| Zakah for Tariq (£6,000), Yasmin (£2,800), Nadia (£12,000), Imran (£8,400) | £150.00 · £0.00 (below £4,000 nisab) · £300.00 · £210.00 (Total = £660.00) |
| Total cost of the 4-person 3-day family parcel | £3.20 + £3.00 + £2.40 + £3.40 + £2.60 = £14.60 (£0.40 under the £15.00 budget) |
| Why are pink marshmallows (Item Z) neither halal, kosher nor vegetarian? | They contain pork gelatine made from animal collagen. |
