4 minutesCharting visitor feedback for an online exhibition
Oriel Glan-y-Môr, a small gallery on the west Wales coast, ran an online exhibition called Tirlun of Year 9 landscape paintings and prints from 1 to 14 March. Today you are the gallery’s data assistant: clean the feedback, chart it honestly and decide how much it can really tell the gallery.
While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then read the stimulus sheet: the exhibition, the form, the 40 submissions and the social media post.
Starter question: How many visits did the exhibition page record, and what did the form fail to stop people doing?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key words · Art · Year 9
2 minutesYour brief: clean it, chart it, question it, advise
You will cross out the repeated submissions, tally the genuine ones, draw a bar chart and a pie chart by hand, work out the averages, take apart the gallery’s misleading chart, judge whether the data can be trusted and write 4 or 5 sentences of advice.
Repeat
A row with the same date and time to the minute and exactly the same answers as the row above it. Keep the first, cross out the rest.
Frequency
How many times an answer appears. Every frequency table today must total 36.
Leading question
A question that pushes people towards an answer, such as “How much did you love our amazing exhibition?”
Slide 3 of 7 · Steps 1 and 2: find the repeats, then tally · Art · Year 9
12 minutesStep 1 & Step 2: cross out the repeats, then tally the genuine responses
Step 1 (5 min): find the 4 repeats on the stimulus sheet and cross them out. Answer (a) and (b).
Step 2 (7 min): tally the 3 questions in bundles of 5. Each table must total 36.
| Stars (Q1) | Tally | Frequency |

18 minutesStep 3 & Step 4: draw the bar chart and the pie chart
Step 3 (9 min): bar chart of the star ratings with a ruler: title, both axes labelled, frequency axis from 0 with an even scale, equal gaps between bars of equal width. Then the mean, median, mode and range with working.
Step 4 (9 min): 360° ÷ 36 visitors = 10° per visitor. Show the working for every angle, check they total 360°, then draw with a protractor from the line already drawn.

Slide 5 of 7 · Steps 5 to 7: the misleading chart, trust and advice · Art · Year 9
16 minutesStep 5, Step 6 & Step 7: take the post apart, judge the data, advise the gallery
Step 5 (6 min): the gallery’s chart starts its axis at 5. Work out how many times taller the social media bar looks than the school website bar, and how many times bigger the real number is. Give 3 more faults, then redraw it fairly from 0 using your Step 2 frequencies.
Step 6 (6 min): 450 visits: what percentage gave a genuine response? Who is missing from the sample? Rewrite Q1 so it is neutral. Find one more weakness, then work out the mode with the 4 repeats left in.
Step 7 (4 min): 4 or 5 sentences. Which channel or channels should the gallery use next year? Quote at least 2 numbers from your charts, correct the claim in the post, and suggest one change to the exhibition page.

2 minutesCheck your work as if you were the gallery director
Tick each success criterion on your sheet that your work meets. Swap with a partner, check that every table totals 36 and the angles total 360°, then correct 1 thing.
- I can clean a data set by removing repeated submissions, using a clear rule.
- I can organise raw data into frequency tables that total correctly.
- I can draw an accurate bar chart with a title, labelled axes and an even scale from 0.
- I can calculate pie chart angles with working and draw them accurately with a protractor.
- I can calculate the mean, median, mode and range and say which best sums up the ratings.
- I can explain how a chart or a question misleads, and judge how far a sample can be trusted.
- I can give advice that quotes numbers from my charts accurately.

2 minutesQuick-check answers before handing in
Check these three answers before your worksheets are collected.
| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| Which responses are repeats, and how many genuine responses are left? | 10, 11, 21 and 24; 40 − 4 = 36. |
| What angle does social media get on the pie chart? | 12 × 10 = 120°, a third of the pie, so not “most”. |
| What is the genuine mean star rating, and what did the post claim? | 136 ÷ 36 = 3.8 stars; the post claimed 3.9 from 40 visitors. |
