5 minutesChecking a Spanish Cafe Menu and Online Order Form
Cafetería El Faro, a beach cafe in Spain, has launched a new click-and-collect ordering form. Customers love the menu, but the owner has noticed she is losing money on bottled water!
While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then look at the menu on the stimulus sheet and answer the starter question in rough.
Starter question: Using the menu on the stimulus sheet, what do un bocadillo de jamón and un agua mineral mean in English, and how much do they cost together before any discount?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key words · MFL · Year 7
5 minutesYour brief: test the cafe’s discount rule and fix the bug
You will translate 8 Spanish cafe items, trace 5 customer baskets through the cafe’s oferta del día (meal deal) flowchart, find the logic bug that makes a bottle of water free, and write a bilingual confirmation message.
Rule / Algorithm
Step-by-step instructions a computer form follows to calculate a bill.
AND vs OR
AND means every condition must be true; OR means only one needs to be true.
Logic bug
A mistake in a rule that makes the program give the wrong price.
Slide 3 of 7 · Step 1: translate 8 cafe orders · MFL · Year 7
10 minutesStep 1: translate the 8 menu items and list their prices
Use Part A of the stimulus sheet to translate each Spanish item into English, write its category (Bocadillo, Bebida or Postre), and copy its price in euros (€).
| Spanish item | English meaning | Category (Sandwich / Drink / Dessert) | Price (€) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. un bocadillo de jamón | a ham sandwich | Sandwich (Bocadillo) | €4.50 |
| 2. un zumo de naranja | an orange juice | Drink (Bebida) | €2.50 |
Slide 4 of 7 · Step 2: trace 5 customer baskets · MFL · Year 7
10 minutesStep 2: trace the 5 baskets through both rules
Compare what the cafe owner wanted with what the website flowchart actually does:
Owner’s intended rule: Take €2.00 off ONLY IF the basket has at least 1 bocadillo (sandwich) AND at least 1 bebida (drink).
Buggy website flowchart: Takes €2.00 off if the basket has at least 1 bocadillo OR at least 1 bebida.
Look at Basket 4 (1 mineral water, €1.50): The owner’s price is €1.50, but the buggy flowchart subtracts €2.00 to give −€0.50 (€0.00 charged)!
Slide 5 of 7 · Steps 3 and 4: fix the rule & write in Spanish · MFL · Year 7
12 minutesStep 3 & Step 4: fix the flowchart and write the confirmation
In Step 3, rewrite the decision box so the €2.00 discount only triggers when a customer orders both a sandwich and a drink. Then in Step 4, write a polite bilingual order confirmation message for Basket 2.
Useful Spanish phrases from the stimulus sheet:
¡Hola! Muchas gracias por tu pedido en la Cafetería El Faro. (Hello! Thank you very much for your order at Cafeteria El Faro.)
Tu pedido es: ... (Your order is: ...) · El descuento de la oferta del día es de 2,00 €. · El precio total es de 6,50 €.
Slide 6 of 7 · Self and partner check · MFL · Year 7
5 minutesCheck your work against the success criteria
Swap sheets with a partner and check all four steps carefully.
- Are all 8 menu items translated accurately with their euro prices in Step 1?
- Did Step 2 spot that Basket 3 and Basket 4 get an unintended €2.00 discount on the buggy form?
- Does your fixed rule in Step 3 use AND (or two linked YES checks) so both a sandwich and a drink are required?
- Does your Spanish message in Step 4 list the 3 items in Basket 2, the €2.00 discount and the €6.50 total?

| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| Which two test baskets exposed the logic bug in Step 2? | Basket 3 (sandwich only, charged €2.50 instead of €4.50) and Basket 4 (water only, €1.50 − €2.00 = −€0.50). |
| What single word caused the bug in the flowchart decision box? | Using OR instead of AND (bocadillo OR bebida). |
| What is the correct final total for Basket 2? | €4.00 + €1.50 + €3.00 = €8.50 − €2.00 discount = €6.50. |
