Match analysis with notational data: where was the game lost?

You have a worksheet with a 40-event coded log from the third quarter of a Year 9 netball match between Llanbedr and Pentre Isaf. Llanbedr were winning at half-time and lost by 1 goal. Today you tally the log, finish the match summary, draw a chart and find out from the numbers where the game was lost. Nobody exercises today.

While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then read The code key and the Coach’s notes in the grey box.

Starter question: Which 2 codes mean Llanbedr gave the ball away without shooting, and which 2 positions are the only ones allowed to shoot?

Your brief: tally, summarise, chart, then explain with numbers

You will tally the 40 events (Step 1), count the turnovers by position (Step 2), complete the match summary with pass completion and shooting percentages for every quarter (Step 3), draw a paired bar chart of goals scored and conceded (Step 4), and answer 5 analysis questions, quoting a number every time (Step 5).

Notational analysis

Turning a match into numbers: an observer writes a short code for every event as it happens, then the codes are counted.

Turnover

Any time Llanbedr gave the ball away without shooting: every X (pass lost) and every E (other error).

Pass completion %

Passes completed divided by passes attempted (P + X), times 100. Shooting % is goals divided by shots (G + M), times 100.

Step 1 & Step 2 on your worksheet: tally all 40 events, then count the turnovers

Step 1 (7 min): go down the log in order and tally every code in groups of 5. Your 6 totals must add up to 40. Step 2 (5 min): go back through the log and count every X and E by position, then work out the Centre’s pass completion. Row 1 of the tally is on the board; copy it.

Code Meaning Tally Total
P Pass completed ||||  ||||  ||||  ||||  |||| 24
Steps 1 and 2 on your worksheet · 12 minutes Check: the 6 totals must add up to 40

Step 3 on your worksheet: complete the match summary and the running score

Copy your third-quarter totals into the Q3 row, then fill every blank. Passes attempted = P + X. Pass completion % = completed ÷ attempted × 100. Shots = G + M. Shooting % = goals ÷ shots × 100. Round to 1 decimal place. The Q1 row is finished on the board; copy its 2 percentages.

Quarter Passes attempted Passes completed Pass completion % Shots Goals Shooting % Interceptions won Other errors Goals conceded
Q1 40 36 90.0 9 7 77.8 3 1 5

Match row: add the 4 quarters first, then work the percentages out from the match totals. Do not average the 4 percentages.

Step 4 & Step 5 on your worksheet: draw the chart, then tell the coach what the data says

Step 4 (8 min): draw a pair of bars for each quarter, goals scored and goals conceded. Shade the 2 kinds differently (solid and striped) so it works in black and white. Add a key and a title that names both teams and what is measured. Step 5 (9 min): answer (a) to (e) in full sentences. Every answer quotes a number from your tables.

Quarter Llanbedr scored (solid bar) Llanbedr conceded (striped bar)
Q1 7 5

Title model: Llanbedr v Pentre Isaf: goals scored and conceded in each quarter.

Steps 4 and 5 on your worksheet · 17 minutes Use a ruler · one quarter’s striped bar will stand out

Swap with your partner and check against the success criteria

Tick each success criterion your partner’s work meets. Then correct 1 thing: a tally that does not add to 40, a percentage not rounded to 1 decimal place, or an answer in Step 5 that gives no number.

  • I can turn a raw coded log into accurate totals, and I have checked them against the number of events.
  • I can calculate pass completion % and shooting % correctly, to 1 decimal place, for every quarter and the whole match.
  • I can draw a paired bar chart with a scale, a key and a title that works in black and white.
  • I can use the numbers to find where a match was lost and explain it with evidence from the log and the coach’s notes.
  • I can explain what notational data cannot show, including the danger of percentages built on very few attempts.

Round the room, then quick-check answers before handing in

Everyone gives 1 number from their tables and says what it proves, nobody repeats one. Then check these answers.

Question Correct answer
In which quarter was the match lost, and by how many goals? The third quarter, by 6: scored 3, conceded 9. Llanbedr won the other 3 quarters.
What was the Centre’s pass completion in the third quarter? 71.4% (10 of 14), against 87.5% for the rest of the team.
Why should the 42.9% shooting figure be treated with care? It is built on only 7 shots. 1 more goal would make it 57.1%.
