3 minutesDarllen ap tywydd: Reading a Welsh weather app for a beach clean
You have a worksheet and a stimulus sheet called Ap tywydd: Aberystwyth. Your class is going to clean the beach in Aberystwyth. Today you read an invented 5-day Welsh weather app to choose the best day and the best 2 hours, do the calculations, and decide whether a scary post about snow is true. All the Welsh you need is on the stimulus sheet, with English in italics.
While the register is called: write your name (Enw), class (Dosbarth) and date (Dyddiad) on your worksheet, then read section 4, Geirfa / Vocabulary, on the stimulus sheet.
Starter question: Look at Sgrin 1. Which day is heulog (sunny), and what is its highest temperature?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key words · Welsh · Year 7
3 minutesYour brief: read the data, calculate, choose a day, then test the post
You will learn 8 weather words, read 5 answers off the app screens, find each day’s temperature range and the mean highest temperature, test every day against the teacher’s 3 rules for the beach clean, judge a 3-week-old social media post against the Met Office forecast, and write 3 Welsh sentences about Thursday.
Uchaf / Isaf
Uchaf is the highest temperature in the day. Isaf is the lowest, usually at night or early morning. Range = Uchaf minus Isaf.
Siawns o law
Chance of rain, as a percentage. 10% means rain is unlikely; 90% means it almost certainly will rain.
Reliable source
Information you can trust because you know who made it, when, and it uses calm facts and numbers rather than capital letters and “Share!”.
Slide 3 of 7 · Cam 1 and Cam 2: vocabulary, then reading the app · Welsh · Year 7
12 minutesCam 1 & Cam 2: 8 weather words, then 5 answers from the screens
Cam 1 (5 min): write the Welsh word for each of the 8 English words, using section 4 of the stimulus sheet. Then cover the sheet and test your partner. The first one is on the board. Cam 2 (7 min): answer (a) to (e) with a number or a day, using Sgrin 1 and Sgrin 2. Give the unit (°C, %, mya).
| sunny | cloudy | windy | foggy | rain | snow | temperature | colder |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| heulog |
Cam 2 (e) is a trap: “warmer than 10°C” means more than 10, not 10 exactly.
Slide 4 of 7 · Cam 3 and Cam 4: calculating, then which day? · Welsh · Year 7
14 minutesCam 3 & Cam 4: ranges and the mean, then test the 3 rules on every day
Cam 3 (7 min): (a) range for each day = Uchaf − Isaf; careful with Friday, where Isaf is −1. Monday is on the board: copy it. (b) Mean of the 5 highest temperatures: add them, divide by 5, show working. (c) Thursday: how many degrees does it rise from 09:00 to 13:00, and when does the chance of rain start to go up? Cam 4 (7 min): tick or cross each rule for each day, write the Welsh sentence in the frame, then choose the best 2 hours from Sgrin 2.
| Dydd Llun | Dydd Mawrth | Dydd Mercher | Dydd Iau | Dydd Gwener |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 − 4 = 5 |
The 3 rules: chance of rain 20% or less · wind less than 20 mya · highest temperature 10°C or more. Write the number next to each tick or cross.
Slide 5 of 7 · Cam 5 and Cam 6: is the post true? then Thursday’s forecast · Welsh · Year 7
12 minutesCam 5 & Cam 6: judge the snow post, then write 3 Welsh sentences about Thursday
Cam 5 (7 min): your friend shared the snow post in section 3. Fill the table comparing the app and the post, in English. The first row is on the board: copy it. Then: should you share the post? Give 2 reasons from the table. Does 1,900 shares make it more likely to be true? Cam 6 (5 min): write 3 sentences in Welsh about Thursday using Bydd hi’n ..., a number, and cynhesach na (warmer than) or oerach na (colder than).
| Question | Ap tywydd | Neges (the post) |
|---|---|---|
| Who made it? Are they a real weather service? | The Met Office, the UK’s national weather service | An unknown page, no link and no weather service named |
Model sentence: Bydd hi’n heulog ddydd Iau. (It will be sunny on Thursday.) After a number use gradd: Bydd hi’n 12 gradd.
Slide 6 of 7 · Self and partner check · Welsh · Year 7
3 minutesSwap with your partner and check against the success criteria
Tick each success criterion your partner’s work meets. Then correct 1 thing: Friday’s range (it is 10, not 8), a tick that should be a cross in Cam 4, or a Welsh sentence with no number or comparison.
- I can read temperatures, percentages and wind speeds from a table in Welsh.
- I can calculate a range, including with a negative number, and a mean.
- I can use data to test rules and make a decision.
- I can judge whether a source is reliable by checking who made it, when, and the language it uses.
- I can write simple weather sentences in Welsh with a number and a comparison.
Slide 7 of 7 · Plenary review · Welsh · Year 7
3 minutesRound the room, then quick-check answers before handing in
Everyone says 1 Welsh weather word and its English meaning, nobody repeats one. Then check these answers.
| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| Which day is the beach clean, and at what time? | Dydd Iau (Thursday), 11:00 to 13:00. The only day that passes all 3 rules: 10% rain, 10 mya wind, 12°C. |
| What is Friday’s temperature range, and the mean highest temperature? | Friday: 9 − (−1) = 10. Mean: 48 ÷ 5 = 9.6°C. |
| Give 2 reasons the snow post is not reliable. | It is 3 weeks old, names no weather service, and shouts in capitals with “Share!”. The Met Office app says foggy, not snow. 1,900 shares proves nothing. |
