Cardiff slideshow: picture cards, paper slide template and slide sorter strip

The 6 places on the cards are real places in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, and the facts are true. The pictures are simple drawings, not photographs. The Red table and Blue table and their slide counts on the activity page are invented for the maths.

For the cover teacher

Picture cards: print 1 set to hold up and show the class. If you can, print 1 more set for each table and cut along the dashed lines, so pairs can copy the place name and look closely at the picture. Read the fact under each card aloud: Year 1 pupils will not be able to read it alone.

Paper slide template: each pair makes 1 slide. There are 2 slides on the page, so print 1 page for every 2 pairs and cut it in half along the dashed line.

Slide sorter strip: print 1 copy. Cut out the 2 strips (slides 1 to 5 and slides 6 to 10), tape them end to end and stick the long strip across the top of the board. Pairs stick their finished paper slide under a number. Use the circle in each box for a red or blue dot (pen or sticky note) to show which table made the slide, and for the maths: dots altogether, empty boxes, ways to make 10, 1 less and 1 more. If you have more than 10 pairs, the extra slides start Slideshow 2, stuck in a second row under slides 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Answers on the activity page: Task 3, 4 + 3 = 7. Task 4, 3 more slides (7 + 3 = 10). Task 5, 6 + 4 = 10, 5 + 5 = 10, 8 + 2 = 10. Task 6, 10 take away 1 = 9, then 9 + 1 = 10.

Picture cards: places in Cardiff

Cardiff Castle

A very old castle in the city centre. Look for the clock tower.

the Senedd

In Cardiff Bay. The Welsh Parliament meets here.

Principality Stadium

A huge stadium. Wales plays rugby here.

Cardiff Bay boats

Boats sail on the water in Cardiff Bay.

Millennium Centre

The Wales Millennium Centre is a big theatre in Cardiff Bay. The big words on the front are in Welsh and English.

Bute Park

A big park with lots of trees, next to Cardiff Castle.

Paper slide template: 1 slide for each pair

Cut along the dashed line. The word writer copies the place name in the title box. The picture maker draws the place in the picture box.

Slide sorter strip for the board

Cut out both strips. Tape strip B to the right-hand end of strip A to make one long strip of 10 boxes. Stick each pair’s slide under its number.

On the lines in each box, write the place name of the slide below it, if you like. A slideshow shows the slides one after another: slide 1, then slide 2, all the way to slide 10.
