Conwy trip pretend camera roll

Conwy Castle, the town walls, the smallest house on the quay, the boats in the harbour and the bridge next to the castle are real places in Conwy, North Wales. Robin Class, Hillside Primary School, their trip, the tablet and the photos are invented, and the photos are simple drawings. Real tablets keep photos in the order they were taken but do not usually show a number on each one: the numbers are added here to help pupils count.

For the cover teacher

Screen 1 is a large pretend tablet showing the camera roll: the place where a tablet keeps the photos you take. Display it on the board, or print 1 copy between two. The 16 photos are numbered 1 to 16 in the order they were taken, reading along each row from left to right, like a book. Along the bottom are 5 icons: camera, photos, heart, album and bin. Screen 2 shows photo 12 opened up big, and the 5 icons with what they do, for you to show the class. Cover Screen 1 with a sheet of paper during Task 3, then uncover it so pupils can check.

The camera roll, in order:

  1. the bus
  2. the castle
  3. a tower
  4. the castle gate
  5. a tower
  6. the town walls
  7. a gull
  8. the class picnic
  9. the smallest house
  10. boats
  11. a gull
  12. the bridge
  13. a tower
  14. boats
  15. the castle
  16. the bus going home

Answers: photo 12 is the bridge; photo 6 is the town walls; photo 15 is the castle. Missing numbers: 13, 14, 16 (counting on) and 7, 5, 4 (counting back). Photo 9 was taken before photo 14; photo 3 was taken before photo 13; in order, 2, 8, 11. The next photo saved will be number 17.

Real facts to share: Conwy Castle was built for King Edward I about 740 years ago, from 1283 to 1287. It has 8 big towers. Old town walls go all the way round the town. On the quay is a tiny red house that people say is the smallest house in Great Britain. There are boats in the harbour and a bridge next to the castle.

Read aloud: “This is Robin Class’s camera roll. It has 16 photos from their trip to Conwy. Photo 1 was taken first. Photo 16 was taken last.” Ask: “Can you find photo 9? What is it?” (The smallest house.)

Screen 2: tap a photo to open it

Read aloud: “We tapped photo 12 and it opened big. It is the bridge next to Conwy Castle. Tap the heart to keep it as a favourite. Tap the album to put it in our Conwy trip album. The bin would throw it away, so we will not tap that!”
