Canolfan Antur Cwm Nant: the visitor survey

The centre, the people and the survey results on this sheet are invented practice data. This is practice material only: it is not a WJEC client brief and it is not NEA work.

1. The client

Canolfan Antur Cwm Nant is a small outdoor adventure centre in Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons). It runs gorge walking, a zip wire and canoeing. Visitors book sessions on the centre’s website, which is ten years old. The manager, Llinos Morgan, is paying for a new website and wants it to be based on evidence, not guesses.

Llinos writes: “Last month we asked 20 visitors to fill in a short survey at reception. I have typed up the answers below. Please tell me what the data says about our visitors and what the new website should do first.”

2. The questions visitors answered

4. Descriptive statistics: a reminder

StatisticHow to find it
MeanAdd up all the values and divide by how many there are.
MedianPut the values in order and find the middle one. With an even number of values, find the halfway point between the middle two.
ModeThe value that appears most often.
RangeThe largest value take away the smallest value. It measures how spread out the data is.
OutlierA value much bigger or smaller than the rest. It can pull the mean and the range a long way, but hardly changes the median.
PercentageNumber in the group ÷ total × 100. With 20 people, each person is 5%.
