Survey facts: Who? Cynon Valley Youth Forum. How? An online survey on a phone or computer. When? March 2023 and March 2025. Who answered? Young people aged 14 to 16 from three secondary schools in the valley. How many? 200 in 2023 and 240 in 2025. Everyone chose one main activity and one wish.
1. Chart: “What is your main free-time activity?” Online games 25% then 30%; sport 30% then 25%; social media 13% then 20%; meeting friends 17% then 12.5%; youth club 10% then 7.5%; other 5% then 5%.
2. Table: “What would you like to have in the area?” (2025): more evening buses 84; a café for young people 66; a cheaper sports centre 42; a skate park 36; a Welsh-language youth club 12; total 240.
3. Quotes. Lowri, 15, Mountain Ash: “I play online games every night because there is no bus home after six o’clock. More buses would be great.” Aled, 16, Hirwaun: “I love playing rugby, but the leisure centre is too expensive. It costs five pounds every time.” Priya, 14, Aberdare: “I speak Welsh in school, but after school there is nowhere to speak Welsh with friends. I would like a café for young people.”
4. Headline on a local news website: “Survey: young people turning their backs on sport. Fewer young people in the Cynon Valley are doing sport than ever before, according to a new survey by the Youth Forum.” (Invented website, April 2025.)
