Eryri and Pembrokeshire reference folder and licences

Please share this sheet between two and do not write on it. All file details and licences below are for your Year 7 Welsh Landscape collage project.

The scenario

Year 7 pupils at Ysgol Bryn Elidir are designing a digital mixed-media landscape collage celebrating the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) and the Pembrokeshire coast. The finished digital collages will be printed on boards for the school hall exhibition and shared on the school website. A pupil has saved 8 reference photos into one messy folder called New Folder (3) with confusing names like IMG_9942_final.jpg and screenshot_2026_11.png, without checking which photos are legally allowed to be cut up and remixed.

Guide to image licences for artists

Licence name and code What it means Allowed in a digital collage (cut, crop, recolour)? How to credit (TASL rule)
Public Domain (CC0) Copyright has expired or the creator waived all rights so anyone can use the work freely. Yes. You may crop, recolour, layer and exhibit it freely. Good practice in school Art: state Title, Author (if known), Source and Public Domain (CC0).
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) Anyone may share, copy, crop, remix and build upon the photo, as long as they credit the creator. Yes. You may crop, recolour and remix it into your collage if you give a full credit. Must state Title, Author, Source, Licence (CC BY 4.0) and state how you changed the image.
Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) You may view or share the whole unedited image for non-commercial use, but NoDerivatives (ND) means you must not crop, recolour or remix it into another work. No. Cutting or layering a photo into a collage makes a derivative work, which breaks the ND rule. Keep in a separate folder for freehand observational sketching only; do not paste the digital file into your collage.
All Rights Reserved (© Copyright) The photographer or gallery keeps all rights. Nobody may copy, edit, republish or exhibit the image without written permission. No. You must not paste, trace or remix this digital file into an exhibited collage. Keep in the observation folder to study colour or composition by eye only.
