The investigation question

How well does play provision in Glanafon meet the needs of disabled children aged 5 to 11?

Glanafon is a county borough in south Wales. Every local authority in Wales has to assess whether there are enough opportunities for children to play in its area. This is called a Play Sufficiency Assessment. The pages below were printed from the web on 15 September 2026.

Families have hit out after Parc y Dderwen adventure playground closed its gates for 8 months. “It’s a disgrace, where are our kids meant to go?” said one mum at the gates.

The council says the £310,000 refurbishment will add a wheelchair-accessible roundabout, a sensory garden and a Changing Places toilet, and that the playground will reopen in September 2026. Councillor Dafydd Morgan, cabinet member for children, said: “This will be the most accessible playground in the county borough.”

This summer my son (he uses a wheelchair) and I set ourselves a challenge: visit every park in Glanafon. Honestly? Only 2 had a swing he could use. Most had bark chippings he couldn’t wheel over. The staff at the Parc Glas café were lovely though! Comment below with your favourite park.
