Cerys’s slalom race: the video evidence dossier

Cerys, her school, her club, the race and every file on this sheet are invented. The slalom rules are real. This is practice only: it is not anyone’s NEA evidence.

1. The situation

Cerys Morgan is in Year 11. For GCSE Physical Education and Health Unit 2 she is being assessed in kayaking, which WJEC says must take place outdoors. Her school cannot watch her live on moderation day, and the specification says:

“Appropriate audio-visual evidence must be available for the performance of any candidate that cannot be seen ‘live’ on moderation day.” (WJEC GCSE Physical Education and Health specification, section 3.2)

It also says performance “must be assessed in a full and competitive context”. So her PE teacher, Mr Evans, needs video of real race runs. Her club coach filmed a regional slalom on a river course in north Wales on Saturday 12 September 2026. Mr Evans now has six video files and some notes, and has to decide what goes in her evidence folder and how.

2. The race

Key words: bow (front of the kayak), stern (back), stroke rate (paddle strokes in a set time), line (the route a paddler takes between gates).

Run 1, the whole run, from the left bank, following her.
0:00 Start. Strong, quick first strokes.
0:18 Gates 1 to 4 clean, tight lines.
0:31 A gust swings the poles at gate 6. Cerys stops paddling for about a second to wait for the pole, and loses speed.
0:37 Red gate 7: she starts the turn late and leans back. Her stern touches the inside pole. Judge signals 2 seconds.
0:52 Gates 9 to 12 clean. Good control of the kayak in the fastest water.
1:10 Gate 14: takes the wide, safe line away from the stopper. Three extra strokes.
1:21 to 1:41 Final section. Coach’s count: 9 strokes from 1:21 to 1:31, then 7 strokes from 1:31 to 1:41. Her head drops. Finish: 101.2 seconds.

Run 2, gates 5 to 9 only, zoomed in from the bank. You can see the paddle blade clearly through the turn at gate 7. From entering gate 7 to leaving it takes 1.5 seconds.

4. The PE department’s evidence checklist (the school’s own rules)

  1. Each clip must show a whole competitive run. The run itself must be unedited: no cuts, speed changes or music during the run. Trimming before the start or after the finish is fine.
  2. The performer must be clearly visible for the whole run.
  3. Every file must open on the department’s laptops. These laptops cannot play HEVC video: they play the sound with a black picture. They play H.264 MP4 files. They cannot open .pages files. They open PDF and Word (.docx) files.
  4. Maximum 500 MB per file. Maximum 1 GB (1,000 MB) per pupil’s folder.
  5. File names: candidate number_surname_activity_what it is. Cerys’s candidate number is 4127. Example: 4127_Morgan_Kayaking_Run1.mp4
  6. Evidence is stored only in the school’s PE evidence folder. Access is view-only, for the teacher who assessed the pupil, the Head of PE and the moderator. Never on personal phones or in group chats.

5. How big is a video? (from the club phone’s camera settings)

Approximate size of one minute of video. HEVC files are smaller because HEVC compresses the picture more, but fewer devices can play them. H.264 files are larger but play almost everywhere.

SettingHEVC (MB per minute)H.264 (MB per minute)

1080p, 60 fps90200
4K, 30 fps170350
4K, 60 fps400440

fps = frames per second, the number of still pictures recorded each second. More frames means smoother slow motion when a coach analyses a movement.

6. A message from the club

From: Club secretary
To: Mr Evans

Great runs from Cerys on Saturday! Could you send us the Run 2 video from the evidence folder? We’d like to post it on the club’s public page and tag the school. We’ll add some music to liven it up. Thanks!
