A pretend email from a partner school in Lesotho

Real: Lesotho, its capital Maseru, the languages Sesotho and English, and the friendship link between Wales and Lesotho (since 1985). Invented for this lesson: Mountain Star School, Class 2, Mrs Mokoena, the email address and the class photo.

For the cover teacher

Show or print page 1 (the email) one between two, and read it aloud in Step 4. Page 2 has the sketch maps for Step 1 and the “How fast?” cards for Step 2. The school, the class and the email address are invented: the address ends in .example, which can never be a real email address, so nothing can be sent to it by mistake.

Say it like this: Lesotho, leh-SOO-too. Maseru, ma-SEH-roo. Sesotho, seh-SOO-too. Lumela means hello. In Sesotho an L before u is said like a D, so say doo-MEH-lah.

Answers for Task 3: Class 2 can see mountains from their window. They sent a photo of their class with the email.

Page 2: where is Lesotho?

Wales Europe Africa Lesotho South Africa

Simple sketch map, not to scale. Wales is in the north. Lesotho is far to the south, in southern Africa.

South Africa Lesotho Maseru

Close-up sketch. Lesotho (red) is a small country with South Africa all around it. The white dot is Maseru, the capital city.

Lesotho has lots of high mountains. Even its lowest land is higher than the top of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest mountain in Wales.
