Choosing keywords to find counting pictures

DCF: Producing → Sourcing, searching and planning digital content

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: finding pictures with keywords and planning the steps of a search, on paper with pretend search boxes. The maths is matching number words to the number of things in a picture. Pupils read number words and object words to choose the right picture, which is literacy work on reading strategies that you can mark from the sheet.

Print: the teacher script and activity sheet (this file), the activity pages one per pupil. No computers are needed. Black and white printing is fine.

Run: 5 min the counting poster · 8 min read keywords together · 12 min Task 1, read and match · 10 min Task 2, best keywords · 12 min Task 3, write keywords · 8 min Task 4, steps to success · 5 min share. Total 60 minutes.

Collect: the activity pages. Quick checks: Task 1, 2 boats (middle), 3 sheep (left), big castle (right), 5 stars (middle); Task 2, four ducks on a pond and six apples; Task 3, three boats and two cows; Task 4, think 1, type 2, press search 3, choose 4. Literacy (reading) evidence: Task 1 and Task 2, where each circle or tick shows the pupil read every keyword and matched it to the picture.

What pupils are doing

The class needs pictures for a counting poster. Pupils read search words and pick the picture each search should find, choose the most exact search words, write keywords for pictures of their own, and put the steps of a search in order.

Teacher script: read this aloud

  1. 5 min Our counting poster

Say: “Our class is making a counting poster. We need pictures: two boats, three sheep, five stars. We can find pictures on a computer with a search. We type keywords. A keyword is an important word that tells the computer what we want.”

Ask: “Have you seen someone search for a picture or a video? What did they type?”

  2. 8 min Read keywords together

Show: write two boats on the board. Point to each word as the class reads it. Sound out b-oa-t-s. Then write three sheep and big castle.

Ask: “How many words are there? What picture would this search find?”

  3. 12 min Read and match (Task 1)

Say: “Read the search words in each box. Then look at the three pictures. Circle the one that matches all the words. Check the number and the thing.”

Pupils who find reading hard can point to each word while a partner reads it, then read it back.

  4. 10 min Best keywords (Task 2)

Say: “Some keywords work better than others. Read the three choices. Tick the words that would find exactly this picture.”

Ask: “Why is ducks not good enough? What else would the search find?”

Draw out: more exact words, like the number, find the picture we really want.

  5. 12 min Write your own keywords (Task 3)

Say: “Now you write the keywords. Count the things in the picture. Write the number word and the name of the thing. Use the word bank.”

  6. 8 min Steps to success (Task 4)

Say: “These are the steps for a good search, but they are mixed up. Write 1 under the first step, then 2, 3 and 4.”

Ask: “What do we do before we type?”

  7. 5 min Share

Say: “Diolch. You are good searchers and good readers.”

Ask: “Read me your keywords for the boats picture. Would a computer find the right picture?”

Ask: “What makes a good keyword?”
