What this practises: evaluating digital content and translanguaging between English and Welsh. Pupils inspect a draft bilingual webpage for an invented school Eisteddfod where the Welsh text was produced by an unchecked machine translator. Using the bilingual glossary on the stimulus sheet, they explain why 6 literal translations fail, write the natural Welsh replacements, fix 4 layout and accessibility flaws, and write a natural 4-sentence Welsh welcome paragraph and image alt text. No computers are needed.
Board: open the supply teacher presentation for board slides, timers and spoken script.
Print: this worksheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Eisteddfod Ysgol Cwm Deri: Draft Bilingual Webpage”, one between two.
Run: 5 min settling starter · 5 min brief on machine translation and web accessibility · 10 min Steps 1 and 2 (spot and correct 6 mistranslations) · 10 min Step 3 (layout and accessibility audit) · 12 min Step 4 (natural Welsh summary and alt text) · 5 min partner check · 3 min plenary review. Total 50 minutes.
Collect: this worksheet. Quick checks: the 6 natural Welsh replacements are 1. Mynediad am ddim i deuluoedd, 2. Ewch ar y llwyfan ar yr ochr chwith, 3. Archebwch eich seddi rhes flaen ar-lein, 4. Lluniaeth ysgafn yn y ffreutur, 5. Wedi’i drefnu gan Bwyllgor Urdd Blwyddyn 9, and 6. Byddwch yn amyneddgar yn ystod yr egwyl, os gwelwch yn dda.
Automatic translation tools often confuse words that have two meanings in English (such as free, left, book, light, run and bear). You will use the English source notice and the bilingual glossary on the stimulus sheet to correct the Welsh text, improve the webpage layout and accessibility, and write a natural Welsh welcome section.
Use Sections 1 and 3 of the stimulus sheet to explain what went wrong in each machine translation and write the natural Welsh phrase.
