DCF: Data and computational thinking → Problem-solving and modelling
What this practises: following a set of instructions in the right order (an algorithm) and finding a mistake in one (debugging), using a healthy habit: washing hands. Tasks 3 and 4 are real numeracy: pupils use before and after for steps in a routine and compare how long everyday jobs take. You can mark both from the sheet.
Print: the activity sheet (page 2 of this file), one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Hand washing picture cards”, one per pupil plus one for you to hold up. Pupils need scissors, glue and coloured pencils. No computers are needed. Pupils do not need to read: you read every task aloud. Nobody goes to the sink; pupils act out the steps at their tables.
Run: 5 min Step 1, why we wash our hands · 10 min Step 2, act out the 5 steps · 12 min Step 3, Task 1 cut and stick · 8 min Step 4, Task 2 Tedi’s mistake · 10 min Step 5, Task 3 before or after · 10 min Step 6, Task 4 how long · 5 min Step 7, say the steps together. Total 60 minutes.
Collect: the activity sheets. Tasks 1 and 2 show the digital skill (order and debugging). Tasks 3 and 4 are the numeracy evidence (before and after, longer and shorter time). Quick checks: the order is Wet, Soap, Rub, Rinse, Dry; Tedi’s mistake is cards 4 and 5 (he dries before he rinses); Task 3 answers are before, after, before, before, after; in Task 4 the longer job is the right-hand picture every time.
Read the words after Say aloud. Show the cards as you go.
