Planning a film release schedule with data: Y Ffordd Adref

DCF: Data and computational thinking → Data and information literacy

Name: Class: Date:

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: GCSE Digital Media and Film Unit 2: Distribution and exhibition strategies of digital media and film industries in Wales, Section 2.1.2 (release strategy; exhibition strategies such as cinema release and streaming; evaluating success) and Section 2.1.3 (an exhibition strategy by planning a release schedule, justifying the chosen strategy and its intended impact on the target audience).

Practice only, not NEA work. Unit 2 is a non-examination assessment done under supervised, timed conditions, which a cover teacher must not run. This lesson uses an invented company and an invented film so pupils can practise the skills. Pupils must not copy this company, film, data or schedule into their real portfolio.

Print: this sheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Y Ffordd Adref: the release dossier”, one between two. Pupils need a calculator. No computers are needed. If you are in a computer room, the same data is in two CSV files that pupils can open in a spreadsheet for Steps 2 and 3.

Run: 5 min read “What you are doing” and the key words aloud · 8 min Step 1, pairs read the dossier · 14 min Step 2, the earlier films · 10 min Step 3, the survey and the claim · 16 min Step 4, the release schedule and justification, alone · 5 min Step 5, the limits of the data. Total 58 minutes.

Collect: this sheet.

What you are doing

Tarian Films, an invented company in Rhondda Cynon Taf, has made a bilingual film called Y Ffordd Adref. You will decide when and where the target audience gets to see it. You have data on three earlier Welsh films and a survey of 400 young people. You will turn that data into statistical evidence, test a board member’s claim, and build a release schedule where every decision is backed by a figure.

Key words

Step 1: read the dossier

Read all five sections with a partner. Circle the three rules in Section 2 that limit your choices.

Step 2: what the earlier films show

Complete the table. Round percentages to one decimal place. Show working for one film in each row in the space below.

MeasureTân ar y MynyddMerch y GlawY Tonnau
Per-screen average, opening weekend (£)
Total box office (£)
Drop from Week 1 to Week 2 (%)
Share of total box office taken in Weeks 1 and 2 (%)

(b) Merch y Glaw also earned money from streaming rentals. How much in Weeks 1 to 4? Add it to its box office. Does day-and-date beat Tân ar y Mynydd’s cinema-only total?

(c) In two sentences: which release pattern kept audiences coming back, and what is the evidence? Which pattern suits a small drama with a young audience best?

Step 3: the survey and the claim

(a) Complete the table from Q1. Percentages of each age group, to one decimal place.

(b) Test the board member’s claim in Section 5 against your figures. Is it supported, not supported, or partly supported? Rewrite the claim so that it matches the data.

(c) From Q3: what percentage of 15 to 17 year olds would most like to see it in half term? What is the most popular answer for 18 to 24 year olds?

Step 4: build the release schedule

Plan at least five stages from the festival to free television. Every stage needs a figure from Step 2 or Step 3 as evidence. Your schedule must follow all three rules in Section 2.

WhenWhat happens, and on which platformWhich part of the audienceEvidence: a figure from the data

Now write a justification of 120 to 150 words to the Tarian Films board. Explain the intended impact of your schedule on the target audience, use at least three figures, and say what you gave up and why.

Step 5: how far can you trust this data?

Give two limits of the data in the dossier. For each, say how it could make your schedule wrong and what better data Tarian Films could collect.

Step by step

  1. 5 min Read “What you are doing” and the key words.
  2. 8 min Read the dossier in pairs. Circle the three rules.
  3. 14 min Step 2: the table, then (b) and (c). Show working.
  4. 10 min Step 3: the survey percentages and the claim.
  5. 16 min Step 4: the schedule and the justification, on your own.
  6. 5 min Step 5: two limits of the data.
