Planning a shape page for a class e-book

DCF: Producing → Creating digital content

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: planning a digital page with text and an image, choosing size and colour so it is easy to read, and knowing which app buttons change text and pictures, all on paper. The maths is 2D shape facts (sides and corners). Pupils write a title and a caption with shape words, which is literacy work on vocabulary and spelling that you can mark from the sheet.

Print: the teacher script and activity sheet (this file), the activity pages one per pupil. No computers or tablets are needed. Colour printing helps for Task 2 but black and white works: screen A is still tiny and pale.

Run: 5 min the class e-book · 10 min shape facts, Task 1 · 8 min compare two screens, Task 2 · 7 min toolbar buttons, Task 3 · 18 min plan your page, Task 4 · 7 min check and swap, Task 5 · 5 min share. Total 60 minutes.

Collect: the activity pages. Quick checks: Task 1, triangle 3 and 3, square 4 and 4, rectangle 4 and 4, circle 0 and 0; Task 2, screen B; Task 3, bigger title to A+, bold to B, colour to the paint bucket, add a picture to the picture button. Literacy (vocabulary and spelling) evidence: Task 1 (traced shape words) and Task 4 (the title, the finished sentence and the pupil’s own sentence, using shape words from the word bank).

What pupils are doing

The class is making an e-book about shapes. Each pupil plans one page on a pretend tablet screen: a big title, a big coloured picture of a shape and a sentence about it. First they count sides and corners, compare a hard-to-read screen with an easy one, and match jobs to toolbar buttons.

Teacher script: read this aloud

  1. 5 min Our class e-book

Say: “Our class is making an e-book about shapes on the tablets. Each of you will plan one page. Good digital makers plan on paper first, so they know what to put on the screen.”

Ask: “What do you see on a page in a book or on a tablet? Words, pictures, a title.”

  2. 10 min Shape facts (Task 1)

Say: “Count the straight sides of each shape and write the number. Then count the corners. A corner is where two straight sides meet. Then trace the shape word.”

Show: draw a triangle in the air with a finger: 1, 2, 3 sides. Ask pupils to draw a square in the air.

A circle has 0 straight sides and 0 corners; it has 1 curved side. Accept either answer for sides if the pupil explains.

  3. 8 min Compare two screens (Task 2)

Say: “Two pupils made the same page on a tablet. Which one is easier to read? Tick it.”

Ask: “What did the pupil change to make page B better? Think about size and colour.”

Draw out: a big title, a big picture, dark words on a light background.

  4. 7 min Toolbar buttons (Task 3)

Say: “Apps have buttons that change how things look. Draw a line from each job to the button that does it.”

Ask: “Which button makes words thicker and darker? That is bold.”

  5. 18 min Plan your page (Task 4)

Say: “Choose one shape. Write a big title at the top. Draw your shape big in the middle and colour it. Finish the sentence using the word bank, then write one more sentence of your own. Write your name at the bottom so everyone knows it is your work.”

Show: the word bank. Say each word with the class and point to it.

Pupils: plan their page on the pretend tablet screen.

  6. 7 min Check and swap (Task 5)

Say: “Check your page with the list and tick each box. Then swap with a partner. Can your partner read your title from across the table?”

  7. 5 min Share

Say: “Diolch. Your teacher can use these plans to make the e-book.”

Ask: “Who made a title that is easy to read from far away? How?”

Ask: “What is one shape fact you wrote on your page?”
