What this practises: GCSE Cymraeg Language and Literature (WJEC, Made for Wales), Unit 4a / 4b: Linguistic Connections, the written examination. Content area 4.1.3 Writing effectively for different purposes and audiences, which names the “press release” and “news bulletin” forms and “writing in an accurate manner when proofreading and correcting and/or translating short text”, and the Unit 4 reading section’s “text editing task” at word, sentence and text level. It is exam practice for first-language pupils in a Welsh-medium class.
Print: this sheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Datganiad i’r wasg: y Caffi Trwsio”, one per pupil or pair. No computers or phones are needed. The school and event are invented.
Run: 5 min pupils read both versions on the stimulus sheet · 16 min Step 1, the error table · 10 min Step 2, rewriting paragraphs 5 and 6 · 16 min Step 3, a radio news bulletin, alone and in silence · 8 min Step 4, advice for the school news team.
Collect: this sheet. Checks you can make without any Welsh: there are 29 errors in the machine translation; pupils should find at least 15, and every row needs a correction and a letter (T, Y, I, C or Cw). Three easy ones to look for: “free” should be am ddim, not am rhydd; “term” should be tymor; “fair future” should be dyfodol teg, not dyfodol ffair. The Step 3 bulletin should be 100 to 130 words.
Ysgrifennodd tîm newyddion ysgol ddatganiad i’r wasg yn Saesneg a’i roi drwy offeryn cyfieithu peiriant. Mae’r Gymraeg yn llawn gwallau. Rwyt ti’n prawfddarllen y cyfieithiad, yn dosbarthu’r gwallau, yn ailysgrifennu’r dyfyniadau mewn Cymraeg naturiol, yn troi’r stori’n fwletin radio, ac yn rhoi cyngor i’r tîm ar ddefnyddio offer cyfieithu.
A school news team wrote a press release in English and put it through a machine translation tool. The Welsh is full of errors. You proofread it, sort the errors, rewrite the quotations in natural Welsh, turn the story into a radio bulletin, and advise the team on using translation tools.
Chwilia am o leiaf 15 gwall yn nhestun B. Ysgrifenna rif y paragraff, y gwall, y cywiriad a’r math o wall. Find at least 15 errors in text B. Write the paragraph number, the error, the correction and the type.
T = treiglad · Y = ystyr anghywir (y gair anghywir i’r cyd-destun) · I = idiom neu gyfieithu llythrennol · C = cystrawen a gramadeg (trefn geiriau, berfau, arddodiaid) · Cw = cywair a chonfensiynau’r ffurf

(b) Pa fath o wall sydd fwyaf cyffredin yn dy dabl? Pam rwyt ti’n meddwl bod yr offeryn yn gwneud y math hwn o wall? Which type is most common in your table? Why do you think the tool makes this kind of error?
(c) Byddai gwirydd sillafu yn dal rhai o’r gwallau, ond nid y cyfan. Rho enghraifft o wall na fyddai’n cael ei ddal, ac esbonia pam. A spellchecker would catch some errors but not all. Give an example of one it would miss, and explain why.
Ailysgrifenna baragraffau [5] a [6] yn Gymraeg naturiol a chywir. Rhaid i’r dyfyniadau swnio fel rhywbeth y byddai disgybl 15 oed a phennaeth yn ei ddweud go iawn. Rewrite paragraphs 5 and 6 in natural, correct Welsh. The quotations must sound like something a 15-year-old and a headteacher would really say.
Mae Radio Cwm (gorsaf gymunedol ddychmygol) eisiau’r stori ar gyfer bwletin newyddion yr orsaf. Ysgrifenna sgript 100 i 130 gair, tua 60 eiliad o’i darllen yn uchel. An invented community radio station wants the story. Write a 100 to 130 word script, about 60 seconds read aloud.
Rho un fantais o ddefnyddio offeryn cyfieithu peiriant a thair rheol i’r tîm eu dilyn y tro nesaf. Rhaid i bob rheol ddod o wall go iawn yn nhestun B. Give one advantage of machine translation and three rules for the team next time. Each rule must come from a real error in text B.
