DCF: Citizenship → Digital rights, licensing and ownership
What this practises: knowing that work belongs to the person who made it, and adding your own name to digital work, using a pretend tablet page for a class e-book (a book you read on a screen). Pupils also write a label for their picture using their letter sounds and write their own name with a capital letter, which is real literacy evidence.
Print: page 2 (the activity sheet), one per pupil. Print the stimulus sheet “Our Day at the Beach: class e-book pages” once to show the class. No computers are needed. Pupils need a pencil and coloured pencils.
Run: 5 min hello and the e-book · 8 min Part 1 · 7 min Part 2 · 5 min plan out loud · 20 min Part 3 · 5 min Part 4 · 5 min share. Total 55 minutes.
Collect: the activity sheet. For literacy, look at the label and the name in Part 3: letters formed, words written left to right with spaces, sound spellings, a capital letter at the start of the name. Quick checks: Part 1 ✓ ✓ ✓ ✗; Part 2 sad, happy, happy.
Read the words after Say aloud.
Say: “Bore da! A class went to the beach at Tenby. In Welsh, Tenby is called Dinbych-y-pysgod. They made an e-book about it. An e-book is a book you read on a tablet or a computer. Each child made one page.”
Show: the stimulus sheet. Point to each page.
Ask: “What can you see on this page?”
Say: “How do we know who made this page?” Point to the red words by Ffion. “The word by tells us who made it.”
Do: read the names together: Ffion, Osian, Amira. Point to the kite page. “Who made this one?” Let pupils notice that nobody knows, because there is no name.
Pupils: tick the pages with a name, cross the page with no name, then trace “by Jac” for the kite page.
Say: “If you make something, it belongs to you. Other people’s work belongs to them. Listen to three stories and circle the happy face or the sad face.”
Read: each sentence in Part 2 aloud twice.
Answers: 1 sad: Osian put his name on Ffion’s work. 2 happy: Amira asked and said who made it. 3 happy: Jac named his own work.
Say: “Now you will make a page for the e-book. Close your eyes. What could you see at the beach? Tell your partner a label for your picture, like ‘a big red crab’.”
Show: the word bank in Part 3. Read the words together.
Say: “Draw your picture inside the screen. Write your label on the line. Say each word slowly and write the sounds you hear. Leave a finger space between words. Then write your name after by, starting with a capital letter.”
Model: on the board: say “b-i-g” slowly and write big, then write by and a made-up name with a capital letter.
Help: pupils who are stuck can copy a word from the word bank and add one sound-spelt word of their own.
Say: “Swap with your partner. Find their name. Does it start with a capital letter? Tick the boxes on your own sheet.”
Do: hold up three pages. Ask the class: “Who made this page? How do you know?”
Say: “Da iawn! When we make work on a computer or tablet, we always add our name, and we never put our name on someone else’s work.”
Name: Class: Date:
Does the page have a name on it? Tick ✓ or cross ✗.
