Reading a French school travel survey

DCF: Data and computational thinking → Data and information literacy

Name: Class: Date:

Cover teacher: you need no French and no subject knowledge

What this practises: WJEC GCSE French (Made for Wales, first teaching 2025), Unit 4 Reading and Writing: reading a factual text (a web page with a graph), answering questions in English, translating sentences into English, and writing short French. Broad theme: language for travel (environment and sustainability). Pupils may answer in Welsh instead of English if they are taught through Welsh.

Print: this sheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “A French school web page: Comment venez-vous au collège ?”, one between two. The figures are also in tilleuls-trajets-enquete.csv if you are in a computer room, but no computers are needed. Calculators are needed for Step 3. No dictionaries and no online translators: they are not allowed in any part of GCSE French, and the stimulus sheet explains every word that is not on the GCSE list.

Run: 6 min Step 1, key words · 12 min Step 2, reading questions · 14 min Step 3, the data · 8 min Step 4, translation · 15 min Step 5, design a survey form and write in French. Total 55 minutes.

Collect: this sheet. The class teacher has a worked example with every answer.

What you are doing

A French school has put the results of its travel survey on its blog. You will read the page, answer questions in English, and check the numbers. The blog makes two claims about the data. One of them is right and one is wrong: you will find out which. Then you will design your own survey form in French, so that your class could collect the same kind of data.

Step 1: key words

Find each phrase on the web page. Write what it means in English. Use the words around it to help you.

FrenchEnglish
à pied
à vélo
le trajet
de plus en plus
la moitié
un quart
la campagne
le transport le plus populaire
moins de pollution
la santé

Step 2: read the web page

Answer in English. Full sentences are not needed, but every detail counts.

(a) How many pupils are in the school, and how many answered the survey in 2025?

(b) What two changes has the school or town made since September 2024?

(c) How did Léa use to get to school? Give two reasons why she prefers her bike.

(d) Why does Tom take the bus? What time does it leave, and how long is his journey? Write the time as a 24-hour time.

(e) What is the committee planning next, and on what date?

(f) Read the two comments. Hugo and Mme Lefèvre each point out a different problem. What are they?

Step 3: what the numbers show

(a) Use Tableau 2. Group the six ways of travelling into three groups. Work out the percentage for each group, to one decimal place. Show your working in the margin.

Group2023 pupils2023 %2025 pupils2025 %
Active travel: à pied, à vélo, en trottinette
Public transport: en bus scolaire, en train
Car: en voiture
Total360100%400100%

(b) The blog says: « En 2023, c’était seulement un quart des élèves. Aujourd’hui, c’est la moitié ! » It is talking about pupils who come on foot or by bike. Test both claims against Tableau 2. Which one is right, and which one is wrong? Give the real figures.

(c) 144 pupils used public transport in 2023, and 144 in 2025. So has public transport become less popular, or not? Explain why we compare percentages, not numbers of pupils, when the totals are different.

(d) Use Tableau 3. What percentage of pupils have a journey of more than 20 minutes? Which group is Tom in?

(e) Write one sentence in English that sums up the main trend from 2023 to 2025. Include two figures.

Step 4: translate into English

Write natural English, not word for word. Keep the tense of each verb.

  1. De plus en plus d’élèves viennent au collège à pied ou à vélo.
  2. Avant, ma mère m’emmenait en voiture.
  3. C’est plus rapide que le bus et c’est bon pour la santé.
  4. Le bus part à 7 h 10 et le trajet dure 40 minutes.
  5. Il y a moins de voitures devant le collège le matin, donc moins de pollution.

Step 5: design a survey form in French for your class

Your class wants to run the same survey and compare the results with Collège Les Tilleuls. Write a 4-question form in French with tick boxes. Question 1 and Question 2 are started for you.

1. Comment viens-tu au collège ?   ☐ ____________   ☐ ____________   ☐ ____________   ☐ ____________

2. Ton trajet dure combien de temps ?   ☐ ____________   ☐ ____________   ☐ ____________   ☐ ____________

3.

4.

Now write three sentences in French predicting what your class will say. Use at least two of: la majorité des élèves, la moitié, un quart, un tiers, plus de … que, je pense que, parce que.

Step by step

  1. 6 min Step 1: find the ten key words on the web page and write them in English.
  2. 12 min Step 2: read the whole page and answer (a) to (f) in English.
  3. 14 min Step 3: group the data, work out the percentages and test the blog’s claims.
  4. 8 min Step 4: translate the five sentences.
  5. 15 min Step 5: write your 4-question form and your three French sentences.
