Cover teacher: you need no Welsh knowledge

What this practises: reading comprehension, distinguishing fact from opinion, source verification and balanced writing in Welsh. Pupils read 3 short Welsh reviews of an invented youth music and food festival (Gŵyl Cerdd Glan Taf) supported by a full Welsh-English glossary. They match 4 key opinion phrases, classify statements as fact or opinion, check ticket and bus figures against the official timetable to expose a fake review, and write a balanced 70 to 90 word Welsh response. No computers are needed.

Board: open the supply teacher presentation for board slides, timers and spoken script.

Print: this worksheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Gŵyl Cerdd Glan Taf: Adolygiadau, Amserlen a Geirfa”, one between two.

Run: 5 min settling starter · 5 min key Welsh opinion phrases · 10 min Step 1 (opinion phrases and fact vs opinion) · 10 min Step 2 (fact-checking against the timetable and spotting the fake review) · 12 min Steps 3 and 4 (70 to 90 word Welsh response) · 5 min partner check · 3 min plenary review. Total 50 minutes.

Collect: this worksheet. Quick checks: Step 1(a): yn bendant = definitely, ar y llaw arall = on the other hand, yn anffodus = unfortunately, o’i gymharu â = compared with. Step 1(b): 1 Fact, 2 Opinion, 3 Fact, 4 Opinion, 5 Fact, 6 Opinion. Step 2: youth ticket is £12.00 (not £25), 8 bands (not 2), shuttle bus runs every 30 min until 20:30, and Review 3 was posted at 09:00 before the gates opened at 11:00.

What you are doing

Three online reviews have been posted about Gŵyl Cerdd Glan Taf. You will use the Welsh-English glossary and the official festival fact table on the stimulus sheet to separate facts from opinions, check which reviewer is telling the truth, and write a balanced 70 to 90 word response in Welsh.

Step 1: match opinion phrases and separate facts from opinions

(a) Use Section 3 of the stimulus sheet to write the English meaning of each Welsh phrase and state whether it introduces a strong positive point, a comparison, a contrast, or a negative point.

Welsh phrase English meaning Role in a review (positive / comparison / contrast / negative)
1. yn bendant definitely Strong certainty / positive point
2. ar y llaw arall
3. yn anffodus
4. o’i gymharu â

(b) Read Reviews 1 and 2 in Section 1 of the stimulus sheet. Decide whether each statement below is a Fact (Ffaith) or an Opinion (Barn) and explain how you know.

No. Statement from Reviews 1 and 2 Fact or Opinion? How do you know?
1 “Roedd y tocyn ieuenctid yn costio £12” Fact (Ffaith) The exact price (£12) can be checked on the official price list.
2 “Roedd y band roc Mellt yn anhygoel”
3 “Roedd 8 band yn chwarae ar y prif lwyfan rhwng 11:00 a 20:00”
4 “Roedd y pitsa tân coed yn flasus iawn”
5 “Daeth y bws olaf am 20:15 yn lle 20:30”
6 “...sy’n rhy ddrud i bobl ifanc yn fy marn i”

Step 2: check the figures against the official festival timetable

(a) Compare the reviewers’ claims against Section 2 of the stimulus sheet.

Detail checked What Cai or Elen says What @BwydGorau99 says Official figure in Section 2 & who is accurate
Youth ticket price £12 (Cai) £25
Bands on main stage 8 bands (Cai) Only 2 bands
Festival shuttle bus Scheduled last bus 20:30, arrived 20:15 (Elen) No buses at all
Drinking water £3.50 per bottle (Elen) Not mentioned

(b) Give three reasons why Review 3 (by @BwydGorau99) is untrustworthy digital content (look at the account status, the time stamp compared with opening hours, and the final sentence of the post).

Step 3 & Step 4: plan and write a balanced 70 to 90 word Welsh response

Step 3 (Quick plan): Note down two positive points and two negative points (plus a solution) you will include in your Welsh paragraph.

Two positive points + figures: _________________________________________________________________

Two negative points + solution: ________________________________________________________________

Step 4 (Write 70 to 90 words in Cymraeg): Using the glossary and sentence frames in Sections 3 and 4 of the stimulus sheet, write a balanced Welsh paragraph saying whether you would attend Gŵyl Cerdd Glan Taf next year and why. Include at least two of the phrases from Step 1(a) (yn bendant, ar y llaw arall, yn anffodus, o’i gymharu â) and at least two figures from the timetable.
