Cover teacher — you need no subject knowledge

Print: this sheet one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Six scenario cards” one per group of four. No computers or phones are needed — phones stay away.

Run: 5 min — read “The five moves” on the stimulus sheet aloud, twice · 20 min — work through the response table, one row per card · 12 min — write the advice card for a Year 7 pupil · 8 min — each group reports on one card: which of the five moves came first, and why that order · 5 min — close on the two phone numbers in the help box.

Collect: this sheet with all six rows and the advice card completed.

Safeguarding — read this before you start: a pupil may recognise one of these situations. Do not take a disclosure in front of the class. Say “come and see me at the end”, take their name, and pass it to the class teacher or the school’s safeguarding lead the same day. Do not promise to keep it secret.

What you are doing

You have six invented situations. For each one you decide what is actually happening, which of the five moves you make first, and who you tell. Then you write an advice card that a Year 7 pupil could keep in their bag.

The order matters more than the list. Screenshotting before you block, and telling someone before you reply, changes the outcome.

Step by step

  1. 5 min — Read “The five moves” on the stimulus sheet. Learn the five words: screenshot, do not retaliate, report, block, tell.
  2. 20 min — Complete the response table. Every row needs a first move and a reason.
  3. 12 min — Write your advice card in the frame below. Five lines maximum, in language a Year 7 pupil would use.
  4. 8 min — Discussion: which card was hardest, and which of the five moves do people most often skip?
  5. 5 min — Fill in the help box from the stimulus sheet so you have the numbers written down.

Your advice card for a Year 7 pupil

Five lines maximum. It has to fit on a card the size of your palm, and it has to be advice they would actually follow.
