Spotting safe choices in an online story

DCF: Citizenship → Identity, image and reputation

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: telling the difference between people we know and people we have never met, and simple rules for staying safe online: keep your name, school and home private, tell a grown-up, ask before you click. Task 2 is real literacy: pupils follow a story read to them and answer questions about it by circling, ticking and writing words and a sentence, and you can mark it from the sheet.

Print: the activity sheet (page 2 of this file), one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Tomos and the tablet”, one between two. No computers are needed. Tomos, his family and Sam are invented. If a pupil tells you something worrying about their own online life, pass it on to the class teacher or the school’s safeguarding lead in the usual way.

Run: 5 min Step 1, people we know · 10 min Step 2, read the story · 7 min Step 3, Task 1 · 15 min Step 4, Task 2 · 8 min Step 5, Task 3 · 12 min Step 6, Task 4 · 3 min Step 7, our rules. Total 60 minutes.

Collect: the activity sheets. Tasks 1, 3 and 4 show the digital skill. Task 2 is the literacy evidence (recalling story details and explaining a choice in writing). Quick checks: Sam is the only person Tomos has never met; answers Bangor, the farm game (sheep), his name and his school, Mam, a pony, happy (proud); for g, “it could be a trick” or “he had to ask a grown-up first”. In Task 3 the safe choices are the 1st and 4th.

Teacher script

Read the words after Say aloud.

  1. 5 min People we know. Say: “Some people we know very well, like our family and our teachers. Some people we have never met. On a tablet or computer, we cannot always tell who someone really is.” Ask: “Who are the grown-ups you could tell if something online worried you?”
  2. 10 min Read the story. Pupils follow on the stimulus sheet, one between two. Say: “Follow the pictures while I read. Put your finger on each part as I read it.” Read all 6 parts. Stop after part 2 and ask: “What do you think Tomos should do?” Stop after part 5 and ask: “Should he click?”
  3. 7 min Task 1: who does Tomos know? Say: “Colour the box green for someone Tomos knows, red for someone he has never met.”
  4. 15 min Task 2: remember the story. Say: “Now answer the questions about the story. You can look back at the story sheet to help you.” Read each question aloud and give time to answer. For question g, say: “Start your answer with Because.”
  5. 8 min Task 3: safe or not safe? Read each line aloud. Say: “Thumbs up if it is safe, thumbs down if not. Now tick your answer.”
  6. 12 min Task 4: my safe rule. Say: “Draw Tomos telling Mam about the message. Then finish the sentence with your own safe rule.”
  7. 3 min Our rules. Say: “Let’s say our rules together: Keep my name, school and home private. Tell a grown-up. Ask before I click.”
