What this practises: GCSE Core Cymraeg (WJEC, Made for Wales). Unit 2: Responding to Various Sources, content area 2.1.3 Analysing sources, where the stimulus sheet “may include a graph/chart, facts and/or statistics and image(s)”, and Unit 3: Preparing for the Future, 3.1.2 Reading non-continuous texts “such as tables and graphs”. Theme: Cynefin. Unit 2 is a speaking assessment taken in Year 11, so today’s talk in Step 5 is practice only, not NEA work, on an invented stimulus sheet.
Print: this sheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Amser hamdden yng Nghwm Cynon”, one between two. Calculators help in Step 2. No computers are needed; the figures are also in cynon-youth-survey.csv if you are in a computer room. An English translation of the stimulus is at the bottom of the stimulus sheet.
Run: 5 min pupils read the stimulus sheet in pairs · 7 min Step 1, chart words · 10 min Step 2, reading the chart and table · 8 min Step 3, is the headline fair? · 14 min Step 4, writing in Welsh, alone and in silence · 11 min Step 5, talking in pairs in Welsh, about 4 minutes each way plus ticking the partner’s checklist.
Collect: this sheet. Checks you can make without any Welsh: in Step 2 the number doing sport is 60 in 2023 and 60 in 2025; the biggest rise is social media, 13% to 20%; the table percentages are 35%, 27.5%, 17.5%, 15%, 5%. In Step 3 pupils should say the headline is not fair: the percentage for sport fell, but the number stayed the same. In Step 5 no dictionaries or notes, as in the real assessment.
