Geirfa ddwyieithog TG: one glossary of 12 IT terms, built in pairs

You have 1 worksheet each but you will hand in 1 glossary per pair, with both names on it. Today you build a Welsh and English glossary of 12 Information Technology terms: the Welsh term, its gender, a meaning in Welsh and a full sentence. Then you practise mutations after y, fy and dy.

While the register is called: write your name, class and date (Enw, Dosbarth, Dyddiad), then read the grey box Y termau a’r rheolau. Underline the 3 rules about what happens after y.

Starter question: Why is it y daenlen but y porwr?

DCF: Interacting and collaborating → Collaboration No computers needed · pairs, 1 glossary between 2

Your brief: agree every entry before you write it down

In pairs you complete 12 glossary entries (4 are done for you), then do the mutation exercise on your own and compare, then swap with another pair and correct each other. Both of you must agree each entry: the English term, the standard Welsh term, the gender of the noun, a meaning in Welsh, and a full sentence using it.

Rhyw (gender)

Every Welsh noun is masculine (g, gwrywaidd) or feminine (b, benywaidd). The gender decides whether the word changes after y.

Treiglad (mutation)

A change to the first letter of a word caused by the word before it. Soft after y and dy; nasal after fy. Some letters never change.

Term safonol (standard term)

The accepted Welsh word, not a word-for-word translation from English: taenlen for spreadsheet, not “dalen daenu”.

Cam 1 on your worksheet: read the 4 finished entries against the rules

The first 4 rows of the glossary (file, password, spreadsheet, link) are done for you. Read each one with your partner and find the mutation in its sentence. Explain to your partner why it is y daenlen but y porwr. Row 1 is on the board.

Cam 1 on your worksheet: fill the remaining 8 rows, agreeing each one

Complete folder, database, browser, website, keyboard, mouse, screen and email. The Welsh terms and genders are in the grey box; the last 4 are printed under the table: bysellfwrdd (g), llygoden (b), sgrin (b), e-bost (g). Each row needs a meaning in Welsh and a full sentence with the mutation correct. The folder row is on the board; copy it.

Cam 2 on your worksheet: write the correct form, on your own, then compare

8 items. Write the correct form after y, fy or dy. Careful: not every one mutates. Do it alone first, then compare with your partner and agree. The first row is on the board.

Y ffurf wreiddiol Y ffurf gywir Why
fy + cyfrinair fy nghyfrinair Nasal mutation after fy: c becomes ngh.

The rules: after y, a feminine singular noun soft-mutates, but ll and rh do not, and a masculine noun never does. After fy, nasal: c→ngh, p→mh, t→nh, g→ng, b→m, d→n. After dy, soft. ff and s never mutate at all.

Swap sheets with another pair and check against the success criteria

Swap your glossary with another pair. Tick each criterion their work meets. Write 1 specific, kind correction with the rule behind it, and 1 thing they did better than you.

  • I use the standard Welsh term, not a word-for-word translation from English.
  • I mutate correctly after y, fy and dy, and can explain why some terms do not mutate.
  • I write a full Welsh sentence that shows the meaning of the term, not just names it.
  • I agree each entry with my partner and record honestly where we did not agree.
  • I check another pair’s work and give a kind, specific correction.

Cam 3: agree your 4 terms for the wall, then quick-check answers

Fill in Cam 3: both names, the 4 terms you propose for the classroom wall, anything you could not agree on and why, and who did what. Then round the room: each pair names 1 term for the wall, no repeats. Check these answers.

Question Correct answer
What is the Welsh for spreadsheet, and what happens to it after y? taenlen, feminine, so y daenlen.
y + llygoden and dy + llygoden: which one changes? y llygoden stays (ll does not mutate after y). dy lygoden changes (soft mutation after dy).
What is fy + cyfrinair? fy nghyfrinair. Nasal mutation after fy: c becomes ngh.
