5 minutesDesigning a Shape Fact Slide with Accurate Maths Words
Tomos is in Year 5. His class is making a slideshow called Shape Facts to teach Year 3 pupils about 3D shapes. He chose the cube.
His first draft has a wrong fact, spelling mistakes and a messy layout. Your job is to find the problems and plan a better slide, on paper.
While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet. Read section 3 of the stimulus sheet, where Tomos’s words are big enough to read.
Starter question: Tomos called his slide My work. Why is that a poor title for Year 3 pupils? What would be better?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key words · Maths · Year 5
4 minutesYour brief: fix Tomos’s slide, then plan a matching one
You will find the problems, learn the maths words and spell them correctly, count faces, edges and vertices, then plan 2 clear slides for Year 3 readers.
Face
A flat surface of a 3D shape. A cube has 6 faces and every face is a square.
Edge
A line where 2 faces meet. Dashed lines in a drawing are edges at the back.
Vertex
A corner where edges meet. More than one vertex: vertices.
Slide 3 of 7 · Steps 1 and 2: spot the problems, word bank · Maths · Year 5
13 minutesStep 1: find the wrong fact, 8 spellings and 5 layout problems
Use section 3 of the stimulus sheet. Find the 1 wrong fact, the 8 misspelt maths words and the 5 layout problems, each with a toolbar button that could fix it.
| Tomos wrote | Correct spelling |
|---|---|
| prisim | prism |
| sqaure | square |
Then Step 2: match each word in the word bank to its meaning, cover it, write it from memory and check it. Pick 4 tricky words and a spelling strategy for each.
Slide 4 of 7 · Step 3: faces, edges and vertices · Maths · Year 5
7 minutesStep 3: count faces, edges and vertices
Dashed lines are edges at the back that you cannot see. Count them too. Tick each edge in pencil as you count it.
| Shape | Faces | Edges | Vertices | Shapes of the faces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cube | 6 | 12 | 8 | 6 squares |
| Square-based pyramid | ? | ? | ? | ? |
| Triangular prism | ? | ? | ? | ? |
Slide 5 of 7 · Steps 4 and 5: plan 2 clear slides · Maths · Year 5
21 minutesStep 4: a better cube slide. Step 5: a matching prism slide
Each slide needs a title that says what it is about, a drawing labelled face, edge and vertex, and 3 bullet points with correct facts and maths words spelt correctly.
Model title: Facts about a cube
Model bullet point: It has 12 edges and 8 vertices.
Model button choice: 2 Size, title size 36, bullet points size 24, so everyone can read it from the back of the classroom.
Slide 2 is about the triangular prism, in the same style. Which buttons make it quickly and make it match?
Slide 6 of 7 · Step 6: swap and check · Maths · Year 5
3 minutesStep 6: swap sheets and check the maths words
Swap with a partner. Check every maths word on their 2 slides against the word bank in Step 2. Tick it, or write the correct spelling next to it.
- I can spot problems with the facts, spelling and layout of a slide.
- I can count the faces, edges and vertices of 3D shapes.
- I can plan a clear slide and choose buttons (font, size, bold, bullet points, crop, rotate) that help my audience.
- I can plan a second slide that matches the first, with precise maths words spelt correctly.

2 minutesQuick-check answers before handing in
Let’s check 3 answers together before your worksheets are collected.
| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| What was the wrong fact on Tomos’s slide? | “A cube has 8 edges.” A cube has 12 edges (and 8 vertices). |
| How many faces, edges and vertices does a triangular prism have? | 5 faces, 9 edges, 6 vertices: 2 triangles and 3 rectangles. |
| Which buttons make slide 2 match slide 1? | 12 New slide, then 10 Copy and 11 Paste the title and bullet boxes. |
