3 minutesHealthy habits tracker: 7 rows of numbers, 2 conclusions
One invented week of sleep, activity, water, screen time and mood. You will turn the 7 rows into formulae, a colour rule, a chart and 2 conclusions. Nobody records or shares their own habits.
While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then read the data table and the 2 national guidelines: at least 60 active minutes a day on average, and 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night.
Starter question: Which day had the fewest active minutes, and which night had the least sleep?
Slide 2 of 7 · Today’s brief and key words · PSE / Well-being · Year 8
2 minutesYour brief: real formulae, one rule, one chart, 2 conclusions
You will write formulae for 9 questions, add a rule that colours the days that missed the activity target, draw 1 labelled chart, and write 2 conclusions: one the data supports, and one it does not.
Range
A block of cells, written first cell to last, such as B2:B8. Formulae use ranges, not numbers typed in by hand.
SUM, AVERAGE, COUNTIF
SUM for a total, AVERAGE for a mean, COUNTIF to count how many cells meet a condition.
Conditional formatting
A rule that changes a cell’s colour when its value meets a condition, such as less than 60.
Correlation
How closely 2 columns rise and fall together. It does not prove that one causes the other.
Slide 3 of 7 · Step 1: open or type the data · PSE / Well-being · Year 8
8 minutesStep 1: get the 7 rows into your spreadsheet
Open sample-habits-week.csv or type the table from your worksheet. Headings go in row 1, Monday in row 2, Sunday in row 8. Check every number against the worksheet before you move on.
| Row | A: Day | B: Sleep hours | C: Active minutes | D: Water glasses | E: Screen time minutes | F: Mood 1 to 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Monday | 7.5 | 45 | 5 | 180 | 3 |
| 3 | Tuesday | 8 | 60 | 6 | 150 | 4 |
Slide 4 of 7 · Step 2: the formula table · PSE / Well-being · Year 8
15 minutesStep 2: work down the formula table, formula and answer
For each of the 9 questions write the formula you typed and the answer it gives. Use ranges such as B2:B8, never numbers typed in by hand.
| What you need to find out | The formula you typed | The answer |
|---|---|---|
| Total sleep for the week | =SUM(B2:B8) | 55 hours |
| Mean sleep per night, to 2 decimal places | =ROUND(AVERAGE(B2:B8),2) | 7.86 hours |
Slide 5 of 7 · Steps 3 and 4: colour rule, chart, conclusions · PSE / Well-being · Year 8
16 minutesStep 3 & Step 4: the colour rule and chart, then 2 conclusions
Step 3 (7 min): add a conditional formatting rule so any day below the 60-minute activity target colours itself, and write down exactly what you set. Then insert 1 chart with a title and labelled axes, and fill in the chart table.
Step 4 (9 min): write Conclusion 1, something the data does support, and Conclusion 2, something you expected that the data does not support. Quote a number from your formula table in each.
| Cells the rule applies to | C2:C8, the Active minutes column only |
|---|---|
| The condition | “Format cells if less than” with the value 60 |
Slide 6 of 7 · Step 5: self and partner check · PSE / Well-being · Year 8
3 minutesStep 5: check your answers against a partner’s
Compare your formula table with your partner. If 2 people disagree, one of you has the wrong range in the brackets. Tick each success criterion you meet, then correct 1 thing.
- My formulae use cell ranges such as B2:B8, not numbers typed in by hand.
- I use the right function for the question: SUM for a total, AVERAGE for a mean, COUNTIF to count how many days met a target.
- My conditional formatting rule uses the real 60-minute guideline, and I can say which days it highlighted.
- My chart has a title and labelled axes with units, and I can justify the chart type.
- One of my conclusions says what the data does not show, because 7 days of 1 invented week cannot prove a cause.

3 minutesWhat did the correlation figure not prove?
Check your main answers before your worksheets are collected.
| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| What is the mean active minutes per day, and how many days actually hit 60? | 60 minutes exactly, but only 4 of 7 days reached it. |
| Which days did the conditional formatting rule colour? | Monday, Wednesday and Sunday. Tuesday on exactly 60 stays uncoloured. |
| Sleep against mood correlates at 0.68. What does that not prove? | That sleep causes a better mood. Mood could affect sleep, or both could follow from a school day. |
