Organising and Crediting Reference Photos for a Welsh Landscape Project

Before an artist makes a digital collage for an exhibition, they must check who owns the reference photos and organise their folder properly. Today you will sort out a messy reference folder of 8 Welsh coast and mountain photos.

While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then read the licence table at the top of the stimulus sheet and answer the starter question in rough.

Starter question: Look at Image 1 (IMG_9942_final.jpg) and Image 2 (screenshot_2026_11.png) on the stimulus sheet. Which one can be cut up and remixed into a digital collage, and why?

Four image licences every artist should check

Just because a photo is easy to save from the internet does not mean it is free to cut up and put into your own artwork. Read the four licences below before starting Step 1.

Licence Can you sketch from it for practice? Can you cut and remix it into a digital collage? Credit needed?
Public Domain (CC0) Yes Yes Polite to credit, no legal restriction
CC BY 4.0 (Attribution) Yes Yes Yes: creator, title, source and licence
CC BY-NC-ND (No Derivatives) Yes (observation only) No (ND means no edits or crops) Yes if shared unedited
All Rights Reserved (Copyright) Yes (private study sketch) No (cannot copy or remix) Permission required to reuse
Key rule: ND stands for No Derivatives (no cropping, recolouring or collage remixing) Read the stimulus sheet carefully

10 minutes

Step 1: Check all 8 reference photos

Look at the 8 images in the messy Eryri and Pembrokeshire folder on your stimulus sheet. Fill in the Step 1 table on your worksheet to decide which ones can be remixed into the digital collage.

Worked first row (Image 1):

  • Current messy file name: IMG_9942_final.jpg
  • Subject zone: Mountain (Tryfan ridge)
  • Licence: CC BY 4.0
  • Allowed in digital collage? Yes, as long as we credit Siân Pritchard.
Complete all 8 rows in Step 1 on your worksheet 10 minutes

Step 2: Rename files and sort into folders

Names like Untitled-1(2).jpg or download_final_v2.png waste time when you are building artwork. Rename all 8 files using the school Art department pattern below.

Naming rule: zone_subject_creator_licence.ext (all lowercase, underscores instead of spaces)

Example for Image 1: mountain_tryfan-ridge_pritchard_cc-by.jpg inside subfolder 01_collage-remix-allowed/

Example for Image 2: coast_barafundle-arch_davies_copyright.png inside subfolder 02_sketch-observation-only/

Keep the original file extension (.jpg, .png or .tif) 10 minutes

Slide 5 of 7 · Step 3: Artist credit lines · Art · Year 7

12 minutes

Step 3: Write full artist credit lines (TASL)

For the exhibition label, every remixed photo needs a full credit line using the TASL rule: Title, Author, Source, and Licence, plus a note saying how you adapted it.

Model credit line for Image 1:

“Tryfan Ridge in Mist by Siân Pritchard, from Geograph Cymru Archive, used under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0); cropped and recoloured for background mountain layer.”

Write complete TASL credit lines for the 4 remaining remixable images in Step 3 12 minutes

Step 4: Plan your 3-layer Welsh landscape collage

Organise your composition into three clear layers (Background, Midground, Foreground) using only permitted images from Folder 01, and explain why the restricted images were left out.

  • Background (sky and distant peaks): which permitted file will you place here, and how will you edit it?
  • Midground (cliffs, quarry or harbour): which permitted file goes in the middle layer?
  • Foreground (close-up detail): which permitted file gives texture at the front?
  • Check the Success Criteria box at the bottom of your worksheet and tick each item you have completed.
Check every row and tick the success criteria 5 minutes

Quick check before you hand in your sheet

Check your answers against the summary below before passing your worksheet to the front.

Question Correct answer
Which 5 images can be remixed into the digital collage? Images 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 (CC BY 4.0 or Public Domain CC0)
Why must Image 5 (Llyn Idwal Reflections) be excluded from the collage? Its licence is CC BY-NC-ND; ND (No Derivatives) forbids cropping or remixing into a collage
Why must Images 2 and 7 be excluded from the collage? Both are All Rights Reserved, so copying or editing them without permission breaks copyright
What do the four letters TASL stand for? Title, Author, Source, Licence
