Adolygu ap yn Gymraeg: does the app page tell the truth?

You have a worksheet and a stimulus sheet, Geiriau Gwyllt: tudalen yr ap, the app store page for an invented Welsh-learning app with its 5 latest reviews. Today you check whether the page and the reviews tell the truth, improve a weak review, then write a fair, useful review of your own in Welsh with 1 suggestion for the developer.

While the register is called: write your name, class and date (Enw, Dosbarth, Dyddiad), then read the app page and the 5 reviews on the stimulus sheet.

Starter question: The page says 4.6 out of 5. What is the average of the 5 latest reviews?

DCF: Producing → Evaluating and improving digital content No computers or phones needed · the app and every reviewer are invented

Your brief: check the facts, judge the reviews, then write a better one

You will work out the average rating and find the sentence that is no longer true (Cam 1), decide which of the 5 reviews are useful (Cam 2), correct 4 mutation mistakes in Cai’s weak review and improve it (Cam 3), write your own balanced review of 120 to 150 words with a star rating (Cam 4), and check it against the list (Cam 5).

Cytbwys (balanced)

A review that gives good points and bad points, each with a reason, so a reader can decide for themselves.

Treiglad meddal ar ôl yn

After yn, an adjective takes a soft mutation: da becomes dda, drwg becomes ddrwg, gwell becomes well. ll and rh do not change.

Byddai’n well petai

“It would be better if”. The phrase that introduces your 1 suggested improvement for the developer.

Cam 1 & Cam 2 on your worksheet: the average, the untrue sentence, the useful reviews

Cam 1 (6 min): (a) work out the average of the 5 latest reviews, (b) give 2 reasons why it differs from the 4.6 on the page, looking at the number of ratings and the date of version 3.0, (c) find the 1 sentence in the description that is no longer true. Cam 2 (6 min): tick or cross each of the 5 reviews with a short reason, then list 3 things that make a good review. Row 1 is on the board.

# Defnyddiol? Pam?
1 (Siôn, 5 stars) ✗ Dim rheswm o gwbl. Dydyn ni ddim yn gwybod beth sy’n “wych”.

Cam 3 on your worksheet: correct Cai’s 4 mutations, then make his review useful

(a) Cai’s review has 4 mutation mistakes after yn. Find and correct them. (b) The Welsh is better now, but the review is still not useful: list 3 things that are missing. (c) Rewrite Cai’s first 2 sentences, replacing “cwl” with a specific reason. The first correction is on the board.

Anghywir Cywir Why
yn da yn dda Soft mutation after yn: d becomes dd.

The rule: after yn, an adjective soft-mutates: p→b, t→d, c→g, b→f, d→dd, g disappears, m→f. Adjectives starting ll or rh do not change: yn llawn, yn rhad.

Cam 4 on your worksheet: plan, then write your review of 120 to 150 words

Plan (5 min): fill the 6 boxes: headline and stars; who you are and how you use the app; 2 good things with a reason; 1 or 2 bad things with a reason; 1 improvement for the developer; who you would recommend it to. Write (13 min): 120 to 150 words, using the Banc iaith phrases. Review Geiriau Gwyllt from the evidence on the page, or a Welsh app you really use.

Model headline and stars: Gwych i ddysgu geiriau, ond gormod o hysbysebion · 3 seren.

Phrases to use: Yn fy marn i · Y peth gorau am yr ap ydy · Fodd bynnag · Yn anffodus · Byddai’n well petai’r ap yn · Byddwn i’n argymell yr ap i · oherwydd · achos

Cam 4 on your worksheet · 18 minutes Stars must match the words: no 5 stars with a big problem

Cam 5: check your own review, then swap and check your partner’s

Count your words and fill in the Cam 5 table. Underline every adjective after yn and check it has mutated. Then swap and tick the criteria your partner’s review meets. Correct 1 thing: a missing reason, a wrong mutation, or stars that do not match the words.

  • I can calculate an average and explain why it differs from the score on the page.
  • I can judge which reviews are useful, and say why.
  • I can correct mutations after yn and improve a weak review.
  • My review is balanced: good things, bad things, reasons, and 1 improvement for the developer.
  • My stars match what I write, and my Welsh is correct.
