Citizenship

Through these elements learners will engage with what it means to be a conscientious digital citizen who contributes positively to the digital world around them and who critically evaluates their place within this digital world. They will be prepared for and ready to encounter the positive and negative aspects of being a digital citizen and will develop strategies and tools to aid them as they become independent consumers and producers.

Possible task

Possible task

Explore a set of familiar digital devices and make a J2e picture poster showing one safe and comfortable way to use each device.

Possible task

Keep a simple media diary for a week. Add PEGI ratings, adverts and in-app purchases you notice, then use the results to suggest a healthy screen-time routine.

Possible task

Analyse the media diary to find what encourages longer use, such as rewards, notifications or autoplay. Design a balanced weekly plan and explain how it supports physical and emotional well-being.

Use the diary findings to create a digital well-being campaign. Include healthy habits, ways to report unacceptable behaviour, and examples of stereotypes or advertising that can influence online choices.

Digital rights, licensing and ownership

Possible task

Create a picture in J2e, add your name as its creator, and label a classmate's picture with their name to show that it belongs to them.

Possible task

Make a poster using one image you created and one image you have permission to reuse. Add a clear credit and explain what a copyright symbol or watermark tells you.

Possible task

Extend the poster into a researched J2e or Canva page. Keep a source list, select reusable images, request any needed permission and explain how this avoids plagiarism.

Possible task

Turn the researched page into a public-awareness campaign. Choose and justify licences for your own work, and apply copyright rules to scenarios involving piracy, remixing and unattributed AI or human-created content.

Possible task

Publish a small creative portfolio with a rights audit. For every asset, record its creator, licence, permission, fair-use reasoning and any data-protection issue, then defend the ethical choices made.

Possible task

Use a digital story to show how two characters might feel after receiving kind and unkind messages. Choose a helpful response for each character.

Possible task

Create a mock class group chat. Rewrite unclear or unkind messages so they are appropriate, identify any bullying, and add steps for saving evidence, blocking and telling a trusted adult.

Possible task

Act as moderator for a mock online community. Apply rules to comments, decide when to mute, block or report, and explain how your choices protect people from bullying, hate and inappropriate content.

Possible task

Investigate a fictional online incident involving posts, photographs, location tags and resharing. Produce a response plan covering safety, evidence, reporting, digital footprint and possible legal consequences.

Write and defend a moderation policy for a global online community. Balance identity, privacy, emotional safety and freedom of expression, and explain how context or culture might alter a decision.

Possible task

With an adult, record a short voice or picture message for someone you know. Choose words and images that make the meaning clear.

Possible task

Build on the message by sending a safe class email or J2e message with a subject, greeting, clear information and an appropriate image for the intended reader.

Communicate the same school announcement as an email, a Canva poster and a short video. Explain how language, layout and media changed for each audience and channel.

Plan and run a digital campaign across several channels for a real school event. Schedule messages, make them accessible, manage replies and evaluate privacy or reputational risks.

Develop the shared presentation into a collaborative Canva guide. Use comments and version history to give feedback, resolve conflicting edits and show how each revision improved the result.

Manage a cross-class digital campaign. Use a shared task board, permissions and version control to coordinate roles, deadlines, peer review and final approval.

Lead a team producing a digital resource for an external audience. Set workflows and access rights, resolve disagreements, gather stakeholder feedback and use a retrospective to evaluate the collaboration.

Possible task

Create a picture, save it with a name you can recognise, close it and find it again with adult support.

Possible task

Save several class files in the correct folders using agreed names. Share one file with a partner, then explain who can view or change it.

Possible task

Organise a multimedia project in a shared cloud folder. Design the folder structure, apply view or edit permissions, create a backup and restore an earlier version of one file.

Possible task

Design the storage plan for a team project. Define naming rules, access roles, version control, retention and backup checks, then test that a deleted or damaged file can be recovered.

Propose a storage architecture for a fictional organisation. Compare local and cloud options for cost, access, security, resilience and legal compliance, then demonstrate the backup and recovery process.

Producing

These elements cover the cyclical process of planning (including searching for and sourcing information), creating, evaluating and refining digital content. Although this process may apply to other areas of the framework, it is of particular importance when creating and producing digital content. It is also essential to recognise, however, that producing digital content can be a very creative process and this creativity is not intended to be inhibited. Digital content includes the production of text, graphics, audio, video and any combination of these for a variety of purposes. As such, this will cover multiple activities across a range of different contexts.

Sourcing, searching and planning digital content

Possible task

With an adult, choose pictures from a safe collection to answer a class question, then place them in order as a simple digital plan or storyboard.

Possible task

Turn a class question into useful search words. Compare information from two child-friendly sources and organise the best ideas in a J2e mind map before creating anything.

Possible task

Research a topic using improved keywords and search operators. Check who created each source, record links and image rights, then produce a storyboard for a Canva presentation.

Write a research brief for a digital campaign. Evaluate sources for authority, accuracy, currency and bias, identify missing evidence, and build a scheduled production plan with resources and risks.

Develop the story into an interactive presentation or Scratch animation. Combine original and licensed media, add navigation, and include captions or alternatives for accessibility.

Create a coordinated digital campaign for a chosen audience using a web page, video and data visualisation. Keep the visual identity consistent and meet accessibility and copyright requirements.

Design and build a working digital solution to a real school need. Integrate suitable media, data or automation, document technical and creative decisions, and publish an accessible licensed final product.

Possible task

Look at a J2e picture you made. Say one part you like, choose one thing to change and save the improved version.

Test a Canva or J2e product with several users. Record whether they can understand and navigate it, prioritise their feedback, then explain the changes made in a revision log.

Possible task

Run structured usability and accessibility tests on the digital campaign. Compare versions against success criteria and evidence, fix the highest-impact problems and justify anything left unchanged.

Evaluate a substantial digital product through repeated user testing and appropriate analytics. Measure it against audience needs, accessibility, performance and ethical criteria, then document and defend the final iteration.

Data and computational thinking

Computational thinking is a combination of scientific enquiry, problem-solving and thinking skills. Before learners can use computers to solve problems they must first understand the problem and the methods of solving them.

Through these elements learners will understand the importance of data and information literacy, and they will explore aspects of collection, representation and analysis. Learners will look at how data and information links into our digital world and will provide them with essential skills for the modern, dynamic workplace.

Problem-solving and modelling

Possible task

Give a partner or floor robot a short sequence of instructions to reach a target. Spot what went wrong, change one instruction and try again.

Import the survey into a spreadsheet. Clean inconsistent entries, use formulae to summarise the data, create accurate visualisations and write conclusions supported by evidence.

Expand the survey into a database or dashboard. Design fields and validation, query different groups, compare relationships in the data and explain possible sampling bias or misleading charts.
