Skills for Life: Personal Safety

Mae disgrifiad y cymhwyster yn Saesneg yn unig, gan ei fod wedi ei gymryd o fanyleb Saesneg Pearson.

Personal safety is Pearson Skills for Life Unit SfL 21, in which learners recognise hazards and dangers that could affect their safety and plan actions to stay safe, building at Level 1 and Level 2 to a written personal safety risk assessment and plan. It is one 20 hour unit that learners combine with others into a Pearson Skills for Life or Skills for Work Award, Certificate or Diploma, achieved once at a single level from Entry 1 to Level 2. Digital demand is low. The only required digital work is at Level 2, where one of the three risk assessments must cover the online setting; online safety guidance, privacy and phishing awareness appear only in Pearson's annex mapping.

  • Entry Level (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3): One assessment criterion at each of Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3: learners state, outline or identify reasons why their personal safety might be at risk and actions they can take to stay safe or reduce the risks. There are no mandatory evidence requirements; the centre sets its own assignment (Pearson's Authorised Assignment Brief is optional), assesses it internally, and Pearson quality assures it through standards verification. Graded Pass or Fail. 20 guided learning hours.
  • Level 1 and Level 2: One assessment criterion at each level: at Level 1 learners create a simple personal safety risk assessment and basic plan for some different settings, and at Level 2 a detailed risk assessment and plan for home, the community and online, explaining how it keeps them safe. Evidence type is chosen by the centre, internally assessed by the centre and quality assured by Pearson through standards verification. Graded Pass or Fail. 20 guided learning hours.

  1. Assessing online hazards in a personal safety risk assessment

Asesu: Mewn gwaith cwrs (asesiad di-arholiad)

Level 2 learners create a detailed risk assessment for three settings, one of which must be online, covering potential hazards and the measures that reduce them, and explain the steps they take to keep themselves safe. Level 1 learners may choose online as one of their two settings, but it is only an example. This is required by the Level 2 assessment criterion and essential information.

    Blwyddyn 7
Pupils list the apps and games they use at home and, for each one, write down one thing that could go wrong and one thing they already do to stay safe.
    Blwyddyn 8
Pupils fill in a simple three column table of online hazards, such as strangers in game chat, who could be harmed and one action that reduces the risk.
    Blwyddyn 9
Pupils write a short risk assessment for their own online life, covering social media, gaming and messaging, and explain how each control measure keeps them safe.

  2. Protecting privacy and recognising phishing

Asesu: Yn cael ei addysgu, ond nid ei asesu

Pearson's annex mapping lists digital and online safety guidance, privacy and phishing awareness as the unit's digital links, and learners at Level 2 are likely to use these as the mitigating measures in their online risk assessment. The specific digital practices are not named in the assessment criteria, so they are taught content rather than a requirement.

  3. Finding online safety resources and services

Asesu: Yn cael ei addysgu, ond nid ei asesu

Pearson's cross-cutting themes annex links the unit to Welsh online safety resources and community safety initiatives, so learners may research where to find safety advice and help. This is suggested by the annex mapping only; no assessment criterion requires online research.

WJEC also offers a Personal safety Skills for Life unit, also 20 guided learning hours. The WJEC unit has four learning outcomes, including supporting others and planning ways of staying safe, and teaches online risks only in its amplification. The Pearson unit has one assessment criterion per level, built around a personal safety risk assessment and plan at Level 1 and Level 2, and makes the online setting compulsory at Level 2. Within the Skills Suite, the WJEC Online safety unit covers digital risks such as phishing and privacy in far more depth, and Basic first aid and Skills in the natural environment share hazard spotting. GCSE Digital Technology shares phishing and protecting personal data, and GCSE Health and Social Care and Childcare shares hazards in the home and keeping people safe.
