Slide 1 of 7 · Settling starter · History · Year 1
6 minutesRobin Class went to Conwy Castle
This is a pretend tablet. It belongs to Robin Class at Hillside Primary School. They took 16 photos on their trip to Conwy.
Conwy Castle is real. It was built about 740 years ago for King Edward the First. It has 8 big round towers.
While the register is called: look at the camera roll on the board. Find something you know.
Starter question: Can you find photo 9? What is it?
Slide 2 of 7 · Step 2: the camera roll and key words · History · Year 1
10 minutesWhere does a tablet keep my photos?
When you take a photo, the tablet saves it. All your photos are kept together in the camera roll. Say it with me: camera roll.
camera roll
The place where the tablet keeps all the photos you take.
icon
A little picture you tap. Camera, photos, heart, album, bin.
save
Keep it safe, so you can find it again.
Task 1: draw a line from each icon to what it does. Ring the icon you tap to find your saved photos.
Slide 3 of 7 · Step 3: find the photo · History · Year 1
10 minutesTask 2: every photo has a number
The numbers show the order the photos were taken. Photo 1 was first, when Robin Class got on the bus. Then photo 2, then photo 3.
Let’s find photo 12. Point along the rows: 1, 2, 3, 4, then 5, 6, 7, 8, then 9, 10, 11, 12.
Photo 12 is the bridge! Tap it and it opens big.
Now you: look at the number in Task 2. Find that photo on the tablet. Ring the matching picture.
Slide 4 of 7 · Step 4: missing numbers · History · Year 1
10 minutesTask 3: some photos have lost their numbers!
Count forwards along the camera roll: 1, 2, 3 ... all the way to 16. Now scroll back: count backwards from 16 to 1.
| Row | Start like this |
|---|---|
| Count on → | 10, 11, 12, then ... 13! |
| Count back ← | 9, 8, then ... ? |
Write the missing numbers in the empty boxes.
Slide 5 of 7 · Step 5: which photo was taken first? · History · Year 1
10 minutesTask 4: the smaller number was taken first
The smaller number was taken first. The bigger number was taken later.
Photo 9 and photo 14. Which do we say first when we count? 9! So photo 9 was taken first. 9 is smaller than 14.
Ring the photo that was taken first. Look carefully: both photos in the second pair are towers! The number tells us.
Then put 3 photos in order: first, next, last.
Slide 6 of 7 · Step 6: save my own photo and check · History · Year 1
9 minutesTask 5: save my own photo, then check
Your photo goes at the end of the camera roll. The last photo is 16. What number comes next? Draw your photo, write its number and a short name, like tower.
Name words: castle · tower · gate · wall · boat · bridge · gull · house · bus
Now check with your partner:
- I can tap the photos icon to find my saved photos.
- I can find a photo in the camera roll by its number.
- I can say which photo was taken first by looking at the numbers.
- I can save my photo with a number and a name.

Let’s answer together.
| Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| Which icon do we tap to find our saved photos? | The photos icon. The camera only takes new photos. |
| Was photo 4 taken before or after photo 10? | Before, because 4 is smaller than 10. |
| What number is my new photo? | 17. The last photo was 16, so we count on 1. |
