Sgript podlediad Cymraeg: a 3-minute podcast script in Welsh

Today you write the script for a 3-minute podcast in Welsh for pupils in your own year. Nothing is recorded and nothing is published. The script is the part that decides whether a podcast is listenable.

While the register is called: write your name, class and date on your worksheet, then read the 2 boxes: Y fathemateg amseru (the timing maths) and Confensiynau sgript (script conventions).

Starter question: A clear podcast is read at about 2 words per second. How many words fit in 50 seconds?

DCF: Producing → Creating digital content No computers, no recording · the script is the work

Your brief: a script that is ready to record

You will choose 1 topic, fill in a running order whose seconds add up to 180, write the full script with 3 open questions for a guest, read it aloud against the clock, then cut the 2 places where it runs over.

Y rhediad

The running order: 5 segments, each with a time, its seconds and a word target (seconds × 2).

CYFLWYNYDD: / GWESTAI:

Presenter and guest. The speaker’s name goes in CAPITALS followed by a colon before every line.

[SAIN: ...]

A sound cue in square brackets, such as [SAIN: cerddoriaeth agoriadol, 5 eiliad, yn pylu o dan y llais]. Voice directions go in round brackets: (yn arafach), (gwenu).

Cam 1 & Cam 2: choose a topic, then plan 180 seconds

Cam 1: circle 1 topic: phones banned in the school day; why Eisteddfod yr Urdd matters to young people; using Welsh online every day; should every pupil walk or cycle to school; or your own.

Cam 2: fill in the running order. Seconds must add to 180; words are about seconds × 2. Leave time for music and for the guest’s answers.

Cam 3: write the full script, in silence

Write every spoken word in Welsh. Use the conventions: speaker name in CAPITALS and a colon, sound cues in [square brackets], voice directions in (round brackets), the segment time on the left. Short sentences, direct questions, no long sub-clauses. Continue on lined paper if you need to.

46 words · 23 seconds. The opening names the show, the question and what is coming.

6 minutes

Cam 4 & Cam 5: 3 open questions, then read it against the clock

Cam 4 (3 min): write your 3 questions for the guest in the table. Open questions only: the guest must need more than 1 word to answer.

Cam 5 (3 min): read your whole script aloud, quietly, while watching the clock. Record your total words, the real time it took, and the 2 places where you must cut words.

Model question Why it is open
1. Beth yn union sy’n digwydd i ffôn sy’n canu mewn gwers ar hyn o bryd? “What exactly happens...” needs an explanation, not yes or no.
2. Petai’r ysgol yn cloi ffonau bob bore, pwy fyddai’n gyfrifol amdanynt? “Who would be responsible...” asks for a reasoned answer.

Meini prawf llwyddiant: cut the 2 places that run over

Cross out words in the 2 places you marked in Cam 5. Then tick each success criterion your script meets and correct 1 thing.

  • My script is in correct Welsh, with correct mutations and accents (â, ê, î, ô, û, ŵ, ŷ).
  • The seconds add up to 180, and each segment’s word count is about its seconds × 2.
  • I use script conventions: speaker name, sound cues in square brackets, and voice directions.
  • My questions are open, and the programme ends by saying when the next one is.
  • I write for the ear: short sentences, proved by reading the script aloud.
