VCSE Built Environment
Mae disgrifiad y cymhwyster yn Saesneg yn unig, gan ei fod wedi ei gymryd o fanyleb Saesneg CBAC.
VCSE Built Environment asks learners to know how apps, digital mapping, GIS, photography and drones support site analysis, to research a Welsh building project, and to plan projects and compare options, but most marks come from hands-on trade work. Unit 1 can be sat on screen, Unit 2 responses must be submitted digitally, and Unit 3 practical work reaches the moderator only as photographs or recordings, with no software named anywhere. The single biggest thing KS3 should build is clear photo and video recording of practical work, saved and named so it can stand as evidence, alongside simple spreadsheet planning.

Using digital tools for site analysis
Unit 1 asks learners to know the planning and feasibility steps in a building project, including site analysis with apps, digital mapping, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), photography and drones. This is tested as knowledge in the sector test, and Unit 2 also expects learners to judge site issues such as flood zones, access and slope, which these tools show.

Paratoi disgyblion
- Blwyddyn 7
- Pupils use the satellite view in Bing Maps or Google Maps to find the school site, measure its boundary with the distance tool and label the entrances, car park and nearby houses.
- Blwyddyn 8
- Pupils photograph one corner of the school grounds on iPads, place the photos on a map in PowerPoint or OneNote, and annotate drainage, access and ground conditions.
- Blwyddyn 9
- Pupils use DataMapWales and the Natural Resources Wales flood map to check a local plot for flood risk and protected sites, then write a short site analysis note with screenshots and the source of each.

Comparing materials and building options using data
Learners must suggest and justify construction methods and materials by comparing cost, thermal performance, maintenance needs, strength and suitability, and understand cost, time and carbon comparisons between newbuild and refurbishment. A spreadsheet table is a sensible way to organise this, though the specification does not name one.

Paratoi disgyblion
- Blwyddyn 7
- Pupils record the price per square metre of three floor coverings from a DIY website in an Excel table and use simple formulae to price covering a 12 square metre room.
- Blwyddyn 8
- Pupils build an Excel table comparing timber, steel and concrete for cost, strength and maintenance, score each from 1 to 5 and chart the totals.
- Blwyddyn 9
- Pupils use a spreadsheet to compare converting an old chapel with building new on the same site for cost, time and carbon, total weighted scores with formulae, and write a justified recommendation.

Da gwybod
- Unit 1 can be sat on paper or on screen: "Centres may enter candidates for either a paper-based or an onscreen version of the test" (Section 3.2, page 42).
- Typing is optional for Unit 2: "The assessment must be submitted digitally, either as scanned handwritten responses or completed digitally" (Section 3.2, page 42).
- Unit 3 practical work reaches the moderator only as images or video: evidence "must be submitted digitally, either as scanned photographs or recordings of the construction tasks completed" (Section 3.2, page 43).
- No software is named. For Unit 2 "There are no specific requirements for assessment" (page 21), and for the Unit 1 on-screen test centres are pointed to the WJEC website for system requirements (page 12).
- Rules on AI are not in the specification. Further information "including information on the use of AI" is in the WJEC guides to conducting non-examination assessment, and "learners will be supervised by a teacher while completing assessment tasks" (Section 3.3, page 43).
- Appendix A maps Data and Computational Thinking to Units 1 and 2 but not Unit 3, and Citizenship to only four sections, 1.1.2, 2.2.1, 2.2.2 and 2.3.3 (pages 50 to 51).
Cysylltiadau â chymwysterau eraill
Site analysis, land use and flood risk overlap with GCSE Geography, and choosing materials and planning a sequence of work overlap with GCSE Design and Technology, so shared KS3 work on digital maps and spreadsheet comparisons would serve all three.
