Skills for Life: British Sign Language

British Sign Language is a Skills for Life unit in which learners meet and greet deaf people, fingerspell names, use numbers, describe weather and transport, and give and follow directions in BSL. It is one 20 hour unit that learners combine with others into a Skills for Life or Skills for Work Award, Certificate or Diploma, and it is the only unit where each level achieved counts. Digital demand is low because no assessment criterion asks for digital work. Digital skills sit in recording signing on video for the portfolio, learning from online BSL video lessons, and reviewing recordings for clarity and accuracy.

How this unit is assessed
  • Entry Level (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3): Six learning outcomes (interacting with people, fingerspelling, numbers, weather, transport and directions), each with assessment criteria at Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. Evidence goes in a portfolio, internally assessed by the centre and externally quality assured by WJEC. 20 guided learning hours.
  • Level 1 and Level 2: Six learning outcomes (meeting people, fingerspelling, numbers, weather, transport and directions), each with assessment criteria at Level 1 and Level 2. Evidence goes in a portfolio, internally assessed by the centre and externally quality assured by WJEC. 20 guided learning hours, and unlike other units each level achieved counts towards the qualification.

Skills that use Sourcing, searching and planning digital content

  1. Learning from online BSL video lessons

    Assessed: Taught, but not assessed

The pack points teachers and learners to free online BSL video lessons and an online library of video clips from Signature. Learners use these to watch, pause and copy signs for the vocabulary in each learning outcome, such as weather, transport and places. This is a suggested resource only and is not assessed.

DCF: Sourcing, searching and planning digital content

    Getting pupils ready

    Year 7
Pupils watch a short online video of the BSL alphabet, pausing and copying each letter, and bookmark the page for practice at home.

Pupils search an online BSL dictionary for the signs for five types of transport and add the links to a shared class vocabulary list.
    Year 9
Pupils compare two online BSL video sources for the same set of direction signs, note any regional differences and choose which source to use, saying why.

    • I can store search results for future use, e.g. bookmark, add to favourites.

    Progression step 4
