Skills for Life: Exercise For All

Exercise for all is a 20 hour Skills for Life unit in which learners take part in a range of indoor and outdoor physical activities safely, work with others, learn the physical and mental benefits of exercise, and set and review fitness goals. It is one unit that learners combine with others into a Skills for Life or Skills for Work Award, Certificate or Diploma. Digital demand is low and the specification does not map the unit to digital competence. Digital work is optional: tracking progress with fitness apps, spreadsheets or wearables, making digital presentations about benefits, and thinking about social media influences on fitness.

  • Entry Level (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3): Four learning outcomes (benefits of physical activity, taking part safely, working with others, simple fitness goals), with two to four assessment criteria each at Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. Evidence goes in a portfolio, internally assessed by the centre and externally quality assured by WJEC. 20 guided learning hours.

Evidence goes in a portfolio, internally assessed by the centre and externally quality assured by WJEC. 20 guided learning hours.

Skills that use Data and information literacy

  1. Tracking fitness progress with apps, spreadsheets or wearables

    Assessed: Taught, but not assessed

Level 1 and Level 2 learners must set fitness goals, take part in activities and review progress, and the amplification suggests goal trackers, fitness apps, spreadsheets, diaries or wearable technology to record activity and progress. The review is required, but the digital tools are only suggested; a paper log or diary meets the criteria equally.

    DCF: Data and information literacy

    Getting pupils ready

    Year 7
Pupils record how many star jumps they can do in one minute each PE lesson for three weeks in a simple spreadsheet table and make a bar chart of the results.
    Year 8
Pupils log their daily step count from a school pedometer in a spreadsheet and use SUM and AVERAGE to compare their weekday and weekend activity.
    Year 9
Pupils set a six week goal such as a faster 1 km run, record each attempt in a spreadsheet with a line graph and use MIN and AVERAGE to judge whether they are on track.
