DIV and MOD for a Quiz Timer
DCF: Data and computational thinking → Problem-solving and modelling
A numeracy lesson in Computer Science on communicating with symbols, building towards GCSE Computer Science Unit 1, Section 1.6.1 (arithmetic, comparison and logical operators). Pupils use DIV and MOD to turn a quiz timer's seconds into minutes and seconds and then hours, write each time with correct units and in display form, and check every answer by reversing it. They turn an invented youth club's quiz rules, written in words, into conditions using comparison symbols such as less than or equal to and not equal to, with MOD, AND and OR, test a rule at its boundary, and find which questions are picture rounds. Finally they correct a test log that mixes decimals with minutes, misuses DIV and MOD and writes a comparison symbol the wrong way round. No calculators.

Reading a Brief for a Canteen Ordering App
DCF: Data and computational thinking → Problem-solving and modelling
A literacy lesson in Computer Science that builds towards GCSE Computer Science Unit 2, Section 2.1.1 Investigation, where learners analyse a set of requirements. Pupils read an invented canteen manager's email asking for a lunch ordering app in three ways: they skim for gist against the clock, scan for six details and the paragraph they came from, and read closely to separate requirements from background. They sort the requirements into must, should and could using the client's own words, find inputs, processes and outputs, spot vague wording and write questions for the client, then turn the brief into a numbered checklist a tester could use. No programming is needed.

Tracing and Debugging a River Flood Warning Flowchart
DCF: Data and computational thinking → Problem-solving and modelling
Pupils trace an automated river flood alert flowchart for an invented sensor on the Afon Glyn using a log of 8 hourly river-level and rainfall readings. By dry-running the algorithm in a trace table, they discover two logic bugs (OR used instead of AND on the Red evacuation condition, and a reversed inequality on the Amber warning threshold) that trigger a false evacuation at 04:00 and miss a real flood warning at 07:00. They correct both decision diamonds, re-verify the algorithm including boundary tests at 2.4 metres, and write the fixed rules as indented IF, ELSE IF, ELSE pseudocode.

Setting Up a Healthy Computer Workstation with Body Data
DCF: Citizenship → Health and well-being
Pupils set up a new computer room at an invented Welsh school so that pupils can use screens without harming their bodies. They learn what a percentile means, read illustrative body data for 12 to 14 year olds to set the adjustment ranges for chairs, desks and monitors that fit 90% of pupils, and convert millimetres to centimetres. They analyse a class log of screen time and breaks, correct a misleading claim about the mean, fix 3 badly set up workstations against Health and Safety Executive guidance, and write the healthy-use poster text for the room.

Planning Digital Sound and Projection Cues for a Mine Scene
DCF: Producing → Creating digital content
Pupils plan the digital sound and projection cue sheet for an invented Year 8 scene set at Cwm Du colliery in 1910. They match audio and image assets to dramatic moments, calculate exact start and fade-out timestamps across a 3 minute 20 second (200 second) scene, check that image resolutions fit the 1920 by 1080 projector without stretching, and write precise technical cue instructions for the sound and projection desk.

Proofreading Auto-Captions for a Filmed Scene
DCF: Producing → Evaluating and improving digital content
Pupils check the automatic captions a video tool made for The Key to Tŷ Mawr, an invented scene filmed by a Year 8 drama club for the school website. Comparing 10 auto-captions with the script, they log at least 14 errors against 6 caption rules: homophones such as were and we're, missing apostrophes, a misheard Welsh word and place name, missing capitals and end punctuation, lines over 37 characters, a missing off-screen speaker label and 3 sounds the tool left out. They write a full corrected set of captions that fits the length rules, count the characters in their longest lines, and write 80 to 120 words to the Head of Drama judging whether auto-captions can be published without a person checking them, and who relies on them.

Measuring and Improving a School Blog Post
DCF: Producing → Evaluating and improving digital content
Pupils evaluate and improve a school blog post about a Year 8 trip to the National Slate Museum in Llanberis, written by an invented teacher, that has left parents phoning the office because the theatre trip deadline is buried in it. They check it against 9 website style rules, count words to find the total (309), the mean sentence length (30.9), the range and the percentage of sentences over 25 words, and convert a reading time of 1.545 minutes into minutes and seconds. They rewrite it with a headline, subheadings, short sentences, the deadline near the top, descriptive link text and alt text, then measure their own version the same way and use the figures to prove it is better.

Reading the Numbers in a Campaign Leaflet
DCF: Data and computational thinking → Data and information literacy
Pupils test the numbers in an invented beach-clean leaflet from a Welsh volunteer group against the group's own litter counts. They read values from a bar chart and a table, turn fractions into percentages, work out each type of litter as a percentage of the total, and check five claims, deciding which are supported, which are exaggerated (cans went up by half, not double) and which misuse a word such as "most". They find that the chart's axis starts at 70, so a rise of a third looks 13 times as big, and draw an honest chart to scale. They then write a paragraph on how the leaflet uses numbers and words together to persuade, and rewrite one claim fairly. Key Stage 3 groundwork for reading non-continuous texts in GCSE English Language and Literature Unit 3: Influence and Power, Section 3.2 and Task A. Practice only, not NEA work.

Structuring and Punctuating a Speech on Local Library Hours
DCF: Producing → Evaluating and improving digital content

They restore colons, semicolons, apostrophes and question marks across 12 errors, check the council's usage table (showing 64% of borrows between 15:30 and 17:30 are by under-16s), and write a persuasive 4-paragraph consultation speech.

Modelling Cliff Retreat at Porth y Rhedyn
DCF: Data and computational thinking → Problem-solving and modelling
Pupils model the retreat of a soft boulder clay cliff at an invented Welsh coastal village, starting from the hydraulic action, abrasion, weathering and slumping that drive it. They calculate a mean retreat rate from 24 years of invented survey data with working shown, then break the problem into inputs, a rule and outputs and design a spreadsheet model on paper with cell formulae. They run the model year by year and use time = distance divided by rate to predict when the coast path, caravan park, lifeboat station road and houses will be reached. They test a 25% faster storm scenario and a rock armour scheme, check the model against a past survey and evaluate its assumptions. No computers are needed.

Pebble Sizes and Averages on a Welsh Beach
DCF: Data and computational thinking → Data and information literacy
Pupils practise calculating and interpreting averages and spread in a Geography fieldwork context. Using invented pebble measurements from 5 sites along a Welsh beach, they put the data in order and work out the mean, median, mode and range for each site, draw a bar chart of the medians, deal with an outlier that distorts the mean, and choose the average that best represents the data. They write a conclusion with figures on whether the results support longshore drift and attrition, and say why a small sample makes it uncertain. Prepares pupils for processing fieldwork data in GCSE Geography Unit 2: Developing Fieldwork Skills.
